Victoria Street Blyth
« on: Monday 22 August 11 23:52 BST (UK) »
A lady walked into my friends shop today while we were talking and asked us if we knew where Victoria Street in Blyth was.

We had no idea but I said I knew some people who would know!!

She is going to pop in again, so any help would be appreciated.

I just googled it and got a family history website which shows an address in Victoria Street, Cowpen in the 1890s but I don't know of one now.

Streetmap doesn't have one listed either.

The nearest modern address I can think of would be Victoria Mews.

In the 1911 Census there are 22 houses in Victoria Street, Blyth, and the Victoria Inn is at No. 13

If you go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and put the coordinates 431340, 581780 in to search it will centre the map on Victoria Street, which you can see on the 1970-1979 map. You can get a better quality map with the same coordinates at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html

Well thank you all. Thats brilliant.

danuslave , I believe she mentioned that she knew of relations from the forties or fifties who lived there and was researching them and wanted to see where they lived.

stanmapstone, the old-maps site was great (how do you know which co-ordinates to put in)? Picked it out no bother at all. It was between York street and King street. She was a little bit out. Apparently she believed it was somewhere near the top of Marine terrace.

c-side, When she had left, that was what we thought i.e. Victoria Mews. As it is relatively new buildings there we wondered if it was named after an old street but we weren't sure.

Thanks again.

Victoria Street is next to Albert Street in the 1911 census, it was just a matter of finding Albert Street on the map.

Just checked it out on the map - how often do I drive past there  ::)

It seems to be about where all the NaRec buildings are now.

c-side, Yes that's where I would put it.There or where the 'new' road is ie. Herons the jewellers corner.

stanmapstone, Thanks for that. Easy when you know how!
