St. Mary's, Haddington - anyone nearby?
« on: Sunday 28 August 11 13:16 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I've found some of my Paterson (or Patterson) family on the graveyard index of St. Mary's Church in Haddington.  There are three Patersons all with index number C49:
James Paterson died 14.12.1916
William Paterson died 6.3.1908
William Paterson died 7.12.1895

I think one William was my great-great grandfather, the other William one of his sons, and I don't know who James is, perhaps a nephew.

If anyone is in the vicinity and can take a look at the inscriptions on the graves I would be very grateful indeed!

Thank you in advance

I had a look around St Mary's churchyard today, but couldn't find the headstone you mention.  I didn't know where plot C49 is, so had to rely on walking around the whole graveyard looking.  So I might have missed it (and some headstones have fallen over).  If you can give me a better idea of the exact location, I will go back and look again.

Haddington has two graveyards named St Mary's.  The one I searched is the large one around St Mary's Parish Church (Church of Scotland).  The other St Mary's is a smaller Catholic graveyard.  I didn't search the Catholic graveyard (I have a couple of family plots there with lair numbers in C section, but the lairs are more recent than the dates you quote).

Thanks very much David.

I got my information from the church website and they have this plan:

I hope this helps and again, I am very grateful for your offer.

Best wishes

Hi Beverley

As back up, there is this link to the East Lothian Council's archives: Monumental Inscriptions and Burial Books www.eastlothian.gov.uk/site/scripts/documents_info.php?documentID=369&pageNumber=11

Thanks for the link.  Looking at the map, Section C was one of the first that I looked over (right near the main gate).  But I will get back down this weekend and double check.

Found it.  I was rather surprised, as lots of graves in C section do not have headstones.  But the Paterson stone is there, albeit lying flat (perhaps pushed over by vandals, as a few headstones have been).

The inscription reads:

Erected
in memory of
Janet Whitson
wife of William Paterson
died 10 Jan 1889
in her 70th year.
William Paterson
their son
died 7th Sept 1895
aged 49 years
also Annie Edmond his wife
who died at Leith 25th Feby 1899
also the above William Paterson
who died 6th March 1908
in his 86th year.
Also James their third son
who died at Liberty Hall 14th Decr 1916
aged 66 years.

On Rootschat I found reference to the baptism on 3 May 1846 of William Paterson, son of William Paterson and Janet Whitson, Pencaitland.  (The Rootschat thread was running in April 2008 and can found under: "Canada / Chinakays 'Two For One' Scavenger Hunt.  Please Join In".   The thread makes reference to several baptisms of different William Patersons, and the thread is not about your family.)

Liberty Hall is at Gladsmuir, a few miles from Haddington.  I think it's the name of a farm.

Hope that helps with your research.
