« on: Sunday 28 August 11 17:02 BST (UK) »
Hi All, I'm not related but very interested in the history of Great Yarmouth, It states that Robert Hales died in Wellington Road, Great Yarmouth.. As I live in this road, it has peaked my interest and I've been trying all day to find out which number if in fact he did depart in this area. Any help with this will be greatly apreciated.
Regards,
Nadine

Hi

I know quite a lot about Robert Hales including a full family tree.  My husbands great grandfather was married to the daughter of Robert Hales younger brother Thomas.

Thank you both for your replies, I first heard of Robert Hales on Radio Norfolk on the Treasure Quest show, then when I was at the Tide and Time Museum. I think it is nice to know a bit of the history about where you live. Again thank you for the answer.

herrings: I am looking for the family tree of Robert Hales - Norfolk Giant. I am a direct descendant of his brother William. Their father William Hales married Anne Bultitude. Both were very tall. Who was Roberts brothers & sisters. There were 9.  I have some listed from our printed family tree. I have William, Esther, Anne, Thomas, Mary. I need name, birth, death & married dates. How tall were the rest of the family? Who were the parents parents? Were they also tall or was there dwarfism? Please get back. trustnjc

Nathanial Hales married Frances Plane 14 Feb 1826 at West Somerton, died 24 Feb 1850, his obituary reads the eldest brother of Robert Hales the Norfolk Giant, the deceased stood 6' 8"
Ref Gentleman's Magazine June 1850 page 452.

Thomas married Hannah Sophia Dyball 1851, died 14 Feb 1897

Hannah married William Read 1825

Sarah married Thomas Peggs 1848 (ref still single 1841 census)

Mary Ann married Joseph Laskey 24 March 1838 St Nicholas Liverpool, under her name is written giantess. Note Joseph is an traveler with a exhibition. Perhaps Mary Ann was part of the exhibition.
she died 1841

Ann married Joseph Laskey her sisters widower 1843 at St George the Martyr London although he still says he is a batchelor, both entries have traveler as occupation and father as James Laskey- miller as father.

Hester went to Philadelphia  landed New York 5 May 1838 age 20

William married Ann Bultitude 1828 and also went to Philadelphia, did not find his immigration but he was on the 1850 census.

Robert - there is a passenger list dated 4 March 1850 ship Adelaide going to New York via Havana Cuba, his description is Giant.
A book called Memoirs of Mr Robert Hales, the English Quaker Giant says he married Elizabeth Simpson 1849 New York a giantess.

All births and marriages were C of E so I don't know where the Quaker part comes in, unless he converted.

There is a copy of an article on ancestry about Robert that says his parents were both over 6' tall.
His sisters averaged 6'3" and his brothers 6'5". It goes on to say Mary was 7'2" and Ann was 6'8"
Robert was 7'8"
Mary, Ann and Robert all were in travelling side shows. When Robert went to New York he travelled with P T Barnum.
