Hume,

WOW! What a piece of information, which confirms several things all at once. I now know the parents of Jane Irvine, formerly Jane Hamilton, mother of Elizabeth Irvine, who married a William Belfield in Fairfield, Derbyshire, England in 1886. I also know the parents of Andrew Hamilton, that he was a war veteran, in receipt of a war pension, and that his parents William & Mary both died before him. Jane Irvine was living at 5, Scotsdown Place, Renfrew,in the 1881 census, so I know the family had moved there soon after the census of 1871. However I am sure that Scotstoun is a part of Glasgow isn't?

What do the abbreviation m.s Lightern mean after Mary Ann Hamilton-is that maiden name perhaps, or merchant ship?

In the 1841 census, the Hamilton family were living in 15, Graham Square, Glasgow St. Johns, and with them was an Andrew Lighterness.

Is the above info from FindMyPast or elsewhere?

Tom

Hi Tom,

All the information is from Andrew's death certificate as found on SP. I'm glad the 1841 census confirms that Lighterness etc is Mary's maiden name; I'd assume Andrew L may be a brother.

m.s. simply stands for maiden surname; it's more commonly used than née in Scottish records. This is partly because a woman always kept her maiden surname here. In England & Wales, they would always tend to use their husband's surname, even when remarrying.

Yes I had a look at FindMyPast for Andrew Hamilton in the army lists WO97 etc, and saw that Andrew H born Carluke, and following it through saw that he was still serving in 1871, just as Gortonboy said-so I take it that was the man with a family? I did see an A Hamilton no other details and have found to be a colour sergeant. The list appears to be incomplete so far would you agree, particularly as we now know he was definitely a Chelsea Pensioner. National Archives seem to suggest that WO97 cannot be ordered for viewing at present, which seems a pity.

The Crimean Casualty lists show many Hamilton names but not our Andrew, but then I suppose casualty means death.

Hi Tom,

Might be worth a try in the military section here at RC ... they're always pretty good at locating records. :)
