Now this is interesting;
MARRIAGE;
23 October 1765, St John, Aylmerton, Norfolk
Robert MASSINGHAM, Bachelor
Hannah KING, Widow
Witnesses, John Massingham, Thomas Miller

Now in 1861 Census Judith says she was born Ayleston and there is a Susannah KING age 90, Widow, Lodging with the Starlings in 1851.

That's a lot of work Trish - well done.

I think you've found two more generations of the Stirling/Massingham family of the Edmund that Rachel is looking for. Everything seems to "fit", doesn't it?

You've also confirmed the link with Worstead, with those burials.

I did look on Freereg for a "starter", though for some reason Edmund's baptism isn't on there.

I've had a look at some of the online obituaries for Edmund - on a lot of them it says he was born "near" Worstead.  Skeyton is only 4 miles from Worstead.

I still think it could be the same Edmund.

As for the Stirling who served with Nelson, I believe it was a Sir James Stirling http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Stirling_%28Royal_Navy_officer%29  - and I can't find any connection with Edmund.

Edmund Stirling wrote a short book which mentions this naval officer - and he doesn't mention any family link as far as I can see.  http://www.nla.gov.au/apps/doview/nla.aus-f16278-p.pdf
(might take a while to load)

I may be cynical, but I think people researching Edmund have put two and two together and made five!

Thanks Yorkslass.  I appreciate your opinion and agree with your conclusions.
Your original work got me started though!
I will wait for Rachels response to this before posting another possible generation for her.
(I'm watching Escape to the Country at the moment!)

Trish :)

Thought you both might be interested in this Will of John Fox of Aylmerton.  It mentions Robert and Hannah Massingham.  http://apling.freeservers.com/Wills/JohnFox.htm

Wow, thankyou thankyou :)

Im just going through all this now - and as I look at the data entering it into my tree - its taking awhile - there is alot there, and Im just a beginner at all this ::)

A few queries, just wondering what leads you to think that the Edmund Starling Snr birth is the 1772?  not 1773?  Id love to know where the hint is.

And, as Yorklass mentioned, it is strange that edmund starlings (jnr) birth has not been listed on FreeReg in Skeyton - I am just searching all of Norfolk (as I type).

Again, thankyou for your time, and if you want to keep looking - please feel free.  I appreciate it.

PS.  I perhaps was being overly cynical of Edmund Jnr - Im certain chinese whispers occur in the realm of family history

actually, rethink - as we had the baptism record of Edmund c/o Parish registers - I suppose it is unnecessary to find it on Free REG also...
