Simpson of Urquhart
« on: Sunday 11 September 11 02:11 BST (UK) »
I am researching Jane Simpson b: 28 Jun 1789 & cr 30 Jun 1789 Urquhart, Moray, daughter of John Simpson and Margaret Duncan. I have in my notes that John was of Mossland, Urquhart.

Jane was second wife of James Matthew, they married 7 Jul 1814 in Elgin, Moray. His first wife was Jean Christie.

Jane Simpson Matthew died 3 Apr 1861 in Elgin, Moray.

Their children John and Jean Matthew migrated to Toronto, Canada. John married Christina Morrison and Jean married John Dunn. I descend from John and Christina.

I would like to know more about the Simpson family from this area and hopefully find out more about John Simpson and Margaret Duncan and thier parents.

Have you tried doing a search on the free Libindx site which gives masses of information about people from Moray?

I've sent you a personal message (PM) because I have been in touch with a descendant of Jane's brother James.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thank you.

I found 2 John Simpsons christened in Urqhart, one in 1764 the other in 1755. I am leaning towards him being the older one, son of John Simpson and Isabel Maver. The younger one's mother was Agnes and John and Margaret didn't use Agnes as one of their 13 children's names. But their first daughter is named Isobel.  She is living with Margaret in 1841 at Moss of Meft. Margaret is 80, Isobel 55 and younger son William 35.

There are Shand's living at Moss of Melf too. I mention this because I believe Margaret is the daughter of Alexander Duncan and Barbara Shand. Margaret and John use both Alexander and Barbara for two of thier children's names.

Too bad the marriage records are so scant for both Urquhart and Speymouth for this period.

I think you are probably on the right lines here, because my wife was a Maver by maiden name and I have traced her family back. They lived at Upper Mest. There were definitely Mavers in Mest at that time, in Overmest and Uppermest anyway and at various neighbouring farms. But it is Mest not Meft... that was how they used to write "s" back then!

I didn't even think of the Meft being Mest because of the s/f confusion. I have only seen the f instead of s when there is another s. Thank you for mentioning this.

Absolutely not. It is genuinely Meft with an f not a long s.
