1886/5 Emigration to NZ William Legender Milburn
« on: Thursday 15 September 11 08:13 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I was wondering if anyone can help me find William Legender Milburn on any passenger lists to New Zealand. I know he came to New Zealand in about 1885 or 6 as he died in 1889 and the newspaper article says he had been in New Zealand for four years. He came to Christchurch, so presumably Lyttelton harbour, but not certain. He had family in Christchurch. He was born in Sunderland in 1863 and died in Sumner, Christchurch New Zealand in a drowning accident 19th Feb 1889.

I imagine he sailed from Sunderland?

His parents were my 2nd great grandparents Robert Milburn 1834-1904 and Mary Milburn (nee Legender) 1836-1921 of Sunderland, who are both buried in Bishopwearmouth cemetery. Their headstone acknowledges Williams death in NZ.

I'd love to find the ship he arrived on, and have been hunting for some time, so hope someone with more experience of finding information may be able to help.

Thanks in advance :-)

Hello Sally!
Sorry I can't help directly with your enquiry, but I'm trying to find whether or not Robert Milburn is related to another family; that of William Milburn 1830-1888, which _is_ in my tree (via William Milburn the architect).
Do you please have any details of the parents of Robert Milburn 1834-1904? I know that his father was also Robert (a ship owner) - I only found that out today when I received the marriage certificate of Robert M and Mary Legender.
Sorry to be slightly off-topic!

Hi FrankE,
I know quite a bit about this Robert Milburn 1834-1904, he was a master Mariner and had 8 children, and 7 sibblings. His Parents were Robert Milburn 1803-1875 and Elizabeth Beck 1814-1876 they married in Monkwearmouth in 1832 and are buried in Mere Knolls cemetery in Sunderland. As you say Robert was a shipowner, and I think he was also a sail maker at one time. I have all of this on my tree on ancestry.com I cant seem to copy and paste anything onto here but would if I could. Are you on ancestry at all? If so I think you can veiw my tree, otherwise let me know and I will try to C&P more info. I have marriage certs and some other certs. Robert 1834's brother Morris Milburn came over her to NZ.

Hear from you soon

Sally

Many thanks Sally!
Yes - I'm on Ancestry, so I'll have a look for your tree when I have a bit of time to spare.
I wondered who Morris M was - he was one of the witnesses at Robert 1834's marriage to Mary L (the other was William Legender).
OK on all the siblings and kids of Robert.

Thanks again.

Catch you later.

Hi
Just browsing and the name caught my eye. This man must have been my brother-in-law's great uncle. My bro-in-law is called Michael Wilton Milburn and he is the son of Leslie Pearson Milburn, who was the son of Wilton Legender Milburn who was the son of Robert Milburn and Mary Legender.

Wilton (born 1871) was William's brother.

So Michael must be a close cousin of yours, Sally! I have all his contact details if you want.

Hello Charles,

That is very exciting! I would love to have contact with him. I'm just working it all out - I am the great grand daughter of George James Milburn who would be Wilton's Younger brother (and William Legender Milburn's younger bro). You know the 'Wilton' is from Isabella Wilton who married William Legender? We tried to find their grave stone in Mere Knolls cemetery, but wasn't able to. I will contact you on the email :-)

Awesome to hear from you

Sally :-)
