Eyam History Plague Deaths etc

Hi - not connected with my family but I have always been fascinated with Eyam.

Just collecting pictures and snippets of hisory now to put together a slideshow for Youtube (my hobby).

Have ordered the 'Woods' book and have read some others and online websites.
What I found odd is that there is no village website where you can actualy get in touch with people, also the village museum isnt on email!  Read that they have a 'talking' tour which would be good.
I'm in Wales and not well so can't get there myself so doing the next best thing and visiting 'virtually'!

Must be marvellous to live on one of those houses with so much history.

Have read that there is some disagreement now as to the population size at the time of the plaque and what the ilnes may have been - but I don't think it detracts for the story of what happened and the whole atmosphere of the place.

Have ocme across a discrepancy that someone mgiht be able to help with - it seems the list of plague victims on the Eyam Museum website http://www.eyammuseum.demon.co.uk/victims.htm differs from the one on the Eyam Village webiste http://www.eyamplaguevillage.co.uk/index.php/eyam-plague/plague-victims.
I have not checked them all but the Museum has dates for some deaths in March 1666 that the village website doesn't have - but them for March the village website has deaths listed that the museum does not??
No email contact for either so no way of asking.

I would have thought that the list would not have been in dispute in Eyam.

I think you will find the Museum has only a partial list as there were supposed to be only about 110 survivors out of a population in the villiage of 360. This would make the death toll about 250 about what the villiage web site has.The plague ran from about September 1665 to about November/December 1666

Oh Thanks - yes I'msure the website and another list from Warwick Uni look the same - but not done detailed comparison yet.
I thought the names would have come from the Church Registers - or weren't they recorded there?  Would have thought these lists would all agree and was surprised when they didn't??  Will be having William Woods book soon to see what he says about it.

I have read about the dispute over the number who were left alive and how many were in the village at the beginning of the plague - but didn't realsie they were disputing the list of deaths as well?

Missing October 1666 dates are on Museum site.

I'm no authority or saying one list is right and the other wrong - just pointing out what I'd seen.

On reading Daniel's little book on Eyam Plague today did find two deaths mentioned though:
PETER MORTON at Bretton - so perhaps thats why he was excluded from Museum list

Also found MARY BUXTON - seems she was at Foolow so could have been excluded for the same reason.

Its not strctly speaking history, but have you read 'Year of Wonders' by Geraldine Brooks ... its a novel, but I think very well researched.
