Dickie family - Cranslagvourarty, Bute
« on: Friday 16 September 11 19:39 BST (UK) »
Hello,
William Peebles Dickie & his wife Rebecca (Montgomery) lived at Cranslagvourarty, Bute. Between 1881 and c1895 they had seven children.
On the 1891 Census it lists his nephew Robert born c1880.
Is it please possible to find his birth/bapt and who his parents were?

Many thanks,
Inchworm

Hello Ev,
Thanks. Yes, I have him on the Census, but I can't seem to find out who his parents were.
I have him up to the 1901 (haven't seen the 1911) in Bute, but he could poss. have gone to Wyoming, US with some of his cousins.
I think that he could belong to one of William P. Dickie's siblings.

Hi Inchworm
I have just found your posts and I am very interested in learning more about the Dickie's of Cranslagvourarty as my paternal grandmother's father was a Daniel Dickie who married in 1914 in New Zealand. My father was told Daniel had served in the Boer War but we can't find any record of this or when he emigrated to NZ from Scotland.
My parents and I visited Cranslagvourarty farm in 2007 on a trip to Scotland and the house was exactly the same as the photo we have with the exception of a tree having been removed.
I also have a couple of photos of a Dickie headstone in the graveyard near the farm (but it's not very clear) and some other photo's of the area and looking back across to the farmhouse.
Can you shed any light on my Daniel Dickie?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks :)

Hi and welcome to Rootschat  :)

Found this -
Daniel Dickie marries Georgina Shanks 1914 New Zealand
and
Death Daniel Dickie 1930 New Zealand (age 67 - born 1863)

That might match this birth -

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYYM-F48

ev

Added - maybe Daniel married 1914 is the son of the Daniel who died 1930  :-\

Hi there,
I have three Daniel Dickie's and your one looks like the one that was born 3 Nov 1863. He was the son of James Dickie & Agnes (Peebles). They had nine children. Three of his brothers went to live in Wyoming, USA, but I believe that they tried NZ first.
Daniel's older brother, William Peebles Dickie, had two daughters that went to NSW, Australia and Otago, New Zealand. One married & divorced in NZ, the other seemed to go back to Aus.

Regards,
Inchworm  :)

My paternal grandmother was the daughter of Daniel and Georgina. Daniel married her in 1914 and then died in 1930 at the age of 67, which puts his birth at 1863.
I have decided he is going to be easier to trace then his wife, seeing as she was born in Australia and I can't even find birth records for 2 out of 4 of her children; they aren't Daniel's children but were brought up by him.
And I have to wait till at least next year to search my grandmother's birth date on the NZ Historic BDM site as Dad is sure she was born in 1913 not 1914 and they have a 100 year restriction on searches of births. Nothing surprises me now with Georgina Shanks!!

Do you know of any tricks for searching Boer War records? I have tried NZ records and what British records I can find but can find no record of Daniel. I have tried searching the surnames of Dickie, Dickey, Dick but do realise he could have enlisted under a totally different another name.

I've looked at some of the sites for British Boer War, but cannot find him either.

From your research do you have any idea when Daniel left Scotland? And if he came directly to NZ?
Dad tells me that Daniel is buried in the cemetery in Invercargill, NZ where he and Georgina lived and where my grandmother was brought up.
Thanks for searching the uk records, we have been considering getting someone who specialises in military history to search for Daniel Dickie.
