Sanday Island Lighthouse Keepers
« on: Saturday 17 September 11 14:13 BST (UK) »
Has anyone got old photographs of Lighthouse keepers on Sanday Island? I'm hoping I might be lucky enough to get a copy of a photo of my Great (x3) Grand Father David Lyall who was a Keeper there. In and around 1800's (he was born in 1775 ). I'm just posting this on an off chance and I've my fingers crossed!
Thanks for reading.

Hi, have you asked at the Scottish Lighthouse Museum in Fraserburgh, they might be able to help perhaps... Alternatively the Northern Lighthouse Board may keep some records. Good luck!

I see David died in 1850 in Peterhead (his will and inventory are both available on ScotlandsPeople and are long documents - a snip at 10 credits each).

Photography was not widespread until late 1840s onwards.   There may not have been much chance for him to have his photo taken, especially if he had retired from the service.

Hello Sam's Mum, Do you know anything about the parents or siblings of David LYALL the lightkeeper? My 4-greats grandmother was Margaret LYALL (bef 1770 - bef 1841) who married Peter MILLER and they were having children in Sanday from 1789 - 1803.
I have often wondered if there was a relationship between David and Margaret - perhaps siblings? LYALL was not a common name in the Sanday parish records. Cheers, Pip
