Birth GIBBS - S.A. help please
« on: Sunday 18 September 11 09:29 BST (UK) »
Hi all,   Looking for birth details of my gr.grandfather James GIBBS  in South Australia around 1844.
father Thomas GIBBS farmer, mother Elizabeth, maiden name unknown.

He married in Sydney 28/5/1884  age stated as 41 years, birthplace ADELAIDE

On birth certificates of 2 children  1884 age stated as 42 years, his birthplace Mt. Torrens
                                                                                                                             Adelaide S.A.
1886 age stated as 44 years   same birthplace

             died 24/7/1904  age 60 years

I contacted Tea Tree Gully Library, S.A. where birth records for this district are held.  They could not
find any record of his birth.

could someone help with this ?   Also have no information on his parents, can find no record of a
Thomas GIBBS arriving in S.A.  can anyone help with this?  convict ???

   thanks,   best wishes,   Jen

Thankyou Sue,  That certainly is a dismal story.

I have this:-   Cairns and district FHS "pioneers and settlers register for Nth Qld to 1920"

James Gibbs ....his parents are Thomas and Elizabeth, issue one son James Gibbs,
died 20th July 1904 Watsonville,  residents Herberton 1882, California Creek 1881,
                      Watsonville 1884.

no mention of any siblings.  Family always thought he was an only child.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kathgen/surnames/397.htm

This tree lists Elizabeth's Death as 18 Jun 1854...there is a death listed as HUGHES  :-\

Elizabeth HUGHES died 18 Jun 1854 not recorded Dist Ade 3 69. She was aged 55 status, relative, residence not listed.

MMM There was the baptism of Elizabeth listed to Thomas and Susannah in Vernham Dean but it was after the marriage to Elizabeth (29 Sep 1833)

Thankyou so much Kris for all your help, I will work through all that info.

Cando, that is a great find!    The marriage notice would possibly have been placed by the couple
as it was in Brisbane Courier possibly on their way to Nth Qld where children were born.  Reference to
"second son" is significant

The marriage was in St. Francis catholic church.  Catholic marriages usually require baptism certificates,
maybe there is a baptism record for James in early church records.  There is no record of birth registration
for wife Margaret JENNINGS in NSW either.  At last I know she was the eldest daughter so I can place
her in correct order amongst her 13 siblings and have an idea of her birth year.

Mentioned in the news item linked by Sue that Elizabeth GIBBS died 9 Jun 1851 and buried Mt Crawford chapel yard [Mt Crawford Cemetery].  There is no death registration for Elizabeth on that day or burial record at Mt Crawford.

Perhaps the Catholic Archives in SA may have parish records to assist you further.
