Laurie John - Southwick
« on: Thursday 22 September 11 09:35 BST (UK) »
John Laurie, aged 24, living at Southwick, married Jane Booth in 1914. He is shown as a stone contrator.
His father is shown as John Laurie - Fisherman.
Looking to find out about the Laurie family prior to 1914.
All help would be much appreciated.

Hi Monica  :)

I think his parents were John Laurie and Margaret Simpson who married Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire in 1879

Thank you for your help. I will need to check if the mother maiden name is shown on the marriage certificate.
John, who married in 1914, is show as living at Wallfries, Southwick.

I had my eye on this one which fits with yours, Monica:

1881

John Laurie, 22, ag lab, b. England
Margaret, w,  21, b. Southwick
Rachel, d, 9 mths, b. Twynholm

PS - Mother's maiden name was Simpson - I checked the cert  ;D

That's great gnu. Looks like you have found all the details for the family  :)

Lance, the 1879 marriage cert that gnu has mentioned will be available to view on line on SP, as was son John's to Jane Booth. His parents' details from his marriage entry will help to work back to his line (and wife Margaret Simpson's family) with confidence.

The family's 1891 census entry in Kirkbean Village indicates John was born in Wigan, Lancashire. There is a submitted IGI entry which may be for him:

John Lauire b. 10 Jan. 1861 Wigan, Lancashire to Thomas and Mary (Carnochan). Death on 20 Dec. 1944

Also a submitted entry for Margaret Simpson on IGI: Born on 6 May 1859 in Colvend, Kirkcudbright to parents Mark and Rachael (Hannah).

As mentioned, for certainty, the 1879 marriage cert will help you  :)

If you are interested I can take the Simpson and Hannah lines further back

Margaret Simpson would have been my grand aunt

her parents were indeed Mark Simpson born Torryburn Fife baptised 11/04/1828 illegitimate son of Andrew Simpson and Jean Kier

and Rachel Hannah baptised Dalton Dumfries 26/01/1833 daughter of Rachel Simpson 1791-1871 and James Hannah 1801 - 1851

I have A3 sized photographs of Mark Simpson and Rachel Hannah a very scary looking pair

their headstone inscription and image is available at http://www.kirkyards.co.uk/buittle/buittle.asp?Inscription=simpson

Margaret Simpson was one of 17 children born to Mark and Rachel between 1850 and 1879

let me know if you want anything else
