Proving a connection.
« on: Monday 26 September 11 23:42 BST (UK) »
I have found the marriage xtract on Ancestory Ireland for a James Hart and  Jane Kielty who I think could be my ancestors. The date of marriage is 1857 which is plausible. The area is plausible . Most  of the children they had have  names that were given to me by an old relative (now deceased). It all seems to fit - however not having the Grooms Mothers name on the Marriage certificate casts doubt for me. What steps should I take to prove that I am looking at the correct person.

This searching for Family history is addictive

I’d check to see if James townland given on the marriage certificate agrees with where you understood the family to have married and with Griffiths; I’d check for James baptism to see if that fits, and I’d look for any will his father may have left which may name him, his mother and (depending on when he died) any other members of the family that you know to be correct.

The townland fits - the Grooms age is not on the marriage extract so cannot compare with Birth Certificate. On the Griffiths there  is a James Hart listed in Maghereagh, Drummaul.

I'm currently having great fun trying to prove connections with my own Antrim ancestors, so I  know where you're coming from.    It certainly is extremely addictive.     It's like doing a massive jigsaw puzzle where there's only a very faint picture on the box and half the bits are missing, hidden out in the garden somewhere!

Yeah it is so difficult. Worse when you live so far away and cannot get to records office or to visit the area to check graveyards etc. It is not a hobby to do if you are not patient, but it is so addictive. Once I get by the 1860's it might be a bit easier (I hope).

Islayhawk,

In 1862 there were 83 households in Maghereagh listed in Griffiths Valuation. Only one of them contained a Hart family, (James Hart, plot 16, with a small house). So if the townland on the 1857 marriage is Maghereagh, I’d say that there’s a strong likelihood that the one in Griffiths is the same family.  (The house was very small, too small to merit a formal valuation. Sadly it would appear to be underneath the modern M22 motorway).

If you know their religious denomination, I’d check church records for James’ birth, siblings etc.
