The marriage of of a George Payne and Elllen A. Rigden was registered in Sunderland June ¼ 1920.

Stan

If this is the correct couple then they had six children, William 1922, Richard 1925, Ralph 1927, Ellen 1928, Ann 1931, and John 1934.

Thank you so so so much to everyone who has posted :-)

Thanks to Stan's discovery of John Payne being wrongly transcribed on the birth records, the mystery may be solved!

Also thanks to Isobel for the extra information :-)

I have now found in all likelyhood the parents of John Thomas Payne, and have the information of his mother on the 1911 census, so now I need his father George Payne, who was born in 1989 in Sunderland :-)

Thank you so much for all your help, I am very grateful indeed! :-)

1)Did we ever confirm about the 1954 marriage that isnt in the indexes?

2) would be best if there was some confirmation that we have the right parents for John before going further. I wonder if siblings give a clue, or if George left a will naming John, with something to confirm it is your 'John'
Or even something confirming that 'your' John was born in Sunderland.
- up to you, but I would be looking for more confirmation at some stage, if possible

John T Payne was married in 1954 to Ivy D Stevens in Chatham, Kent.  I have the certificate, that says his father is George Payne and John's address was Sunderland.

I've found a few people who are researching George Payne on ancestry.co.uk and messaged them to see if their George Payne is the father of my John Pohn Payne, as many of them have living relatives listed which he may be one of, hopefully :-)

Hi stanmapstone
I've just seen your post about George Payne and Ellen Rigden were my Great Grandparents
They actually had 9 children - the eldest of which is my Grandfather George who was born in 1920 a few month after they married
