WW2 Missing in Action !
« on: Sunday 20 June 04 19:56 BST (UK) »

If a serving Soldier was simply recorded as Missing in Action,  would a Death Certificate have been issued  ? -

If he was only classed as Missing would he be on the Roll of Honour ?

Would his then wife have received a pension if her husband was not officialy dead ! ?

Hi  Suey

I seem to recall there being a 'seven year rule' about missing persons.  It may only relate to civilian cases where one party is trying to re-marry, but it's something along the lines of: if someone has been missing for seven years, they can be 'presumed dead'.

Don't know if this helps at all?...

Have you checked the CWG site for his name?

Thanks Bel and Mr B...

I am waiting on the marriage cert for 'my man' and also a birth cert for his son as we are unsure of his christian names..

He is not on the CWGC under the name we have for him !  We were told that he died at Dunkirk but his son remembers that he was simply reported as 'Missing in Action'.

I will contact the CWGC to see if I can get a definitive answer to the question -  I'll post the answer if I get one.
Thanks Suey.

Mr B the name I have for this man is Michael (Possible middle name Vernon) Taylor - he came from Bishops Stortford Herts.

Thats about all we know at the moment except what I said before..

I have the two certs on order with the GRO to confirm a name - I've looked at all the M Taylors on CWGC but unless I'm missing something I cant place him.

I found 6 M Taylors (no first names) listed as British Army  prisoners of war held by the Germans in WWII.

Prisoner numbers, camps held in , and army service number are also  given - that is all.

None of the following had a relatively low prisoner number which would be expected for someone taken prisoner early in the war as at Dunkirk.

Initial(s)  Unit

MW         RASC
M            RA
M            RA
M            Cheshire
M            R. Ulster Rifles
MW         REME

Good luck with your search

Stuart

Hello Stuart - many thanks for your help.

What a wild goose chase this chap has had us on -  I received a copy of his marriage cert today and he gives his name as Victor (looks like Leon) Taylor.  Reg No 5828_56 a Private in the Suffolk Regt. !  Married in Bisops Stortford Herts.

He was always known as Michael !  Again I can't find him on The CWGC site but have e mailed them with the 'Missing in Action' Querie - they have replied saying a full answer will be given but will take about 3 weeks - so watch this space...

Off to have a look and see if there is anything on the Suffolk Regt.
