John,

Going down your list of Crouches, my register has the following info:

1.  Christian Crouch.  Baptised May 22 1771 - the daughter of Nickles and Mary  (is this a clerical error, or is this really a girl??)
2.  Nicholas Crouch.  Baptised 7 Mar 1738/9  Aged 2 - the son of Christopher and Joanah.
3.  Mary Parker (Crouch). Buried 1 Apr 1805, the widow of Nicholas.  Two possibilities for her baptism:  Jan 21 1721, daughter of Ambrose and Mary or Nov 4 1739, daughter of William and Anne.
4. Christopher Crouch.  Baptised 26 Jan 1708 - son of Robert and Elizabeth.  Buried 24 Jan 1780 aged 71, Principal farmer.
5. Robert Crouch  Baptised Mar 27 1684 - son of Ralfe and Mary.  Buried Mar 22 1748.
6. Elizabeth Chubb (Crouch).  Buried  27 Jan 1738/9 - widow of Robert.  No baptism record.
7.  Ralph Crouch.  No baptism record.  Buried 28 Apr 1739, described as Ralfe Senior.
8.  Mary Crouch.  No baptism record for 1738.

I hope this is helpful.  There are a great number of Crouches in the register, so if you need further info, please don't hesitate to ask, and I will send you a complete list of them.

Hi Jill,

I have a request please - I have a James Sheppard appearing in the 1851 and 1861 censuses who gives his place of birth as Barford in Wiltshire and his year of birth appears to be about 1798. I am trying to trace his baptism and parents please.

He was a Cooper by trade. I came across a Bastardy Examination in Barford dated 1790 where the defendant was named as a John Shepherd, occupation Cooper if that is of any use?

Many thanks,

Eric

Hi Eric,
My register has a James Shepheard baptised on February 31(!!) 1796, the son of John and Mary.
Also listed are Ann Shepherd, Baptised Aug 29 1790, William Shepherd, baptised Jan 4 1792, and Elizabeth Sheppard,. Baptised Oct 1 1793, all to the same parents, and in Elizabeth's case, John is listed as a cooper.  These are the only siblings of James that I can see.   There is a John Shepherd, aged 68, of the Green Dragon, whose burial is listed on Nov 12 1783.  Perhaps this is the father of James?   The Green Dragon is still the pub in Barford.

Hope this helps.  Let me know if I can look up any others.

regards
Jill

Many thanks Jill for the very speedy look up! James gave his age as 53 in the 1851 census and 62 in the 1861 census so it looks like a very good possibility.

I'm not sure that the John buried in 1783 was the father of James baptised in 1796  ;D

The 1861 census has James Sheppard Cooper aged 62 living next door to a Stephen Sheppard also a Cooper, aged 73 and also born in Barford, Wilts. - could I ask you to look up Stephen please as the similarity of occupation and place of birth perhaps points to there being related.

Many thanks,

Eric
