*COMPLETED* Robert Smith of the Bacchus Inn, Halifax [1901, 1905]
« on: Thursday 06 October 11 12:25 BST (UK) »
I am looking at the details of Robert Smith who was landlord of The Bacchus Inn in Halifax in 1901 and 1905.

In the 1881 census, he is at Marvell Square, Skircoat, Halifax and says he was born at Cowkwoold, Yorkshire, and in the 1891 census, he is at King Cross Road, Halifax where he says he was born at Coulkwoold, Yorkshire.

Can anyone suggest where his birthplace might be?

Coxwold perhaps?

If you have his marriage certificate to Margaret, perhaps his Father's name will help find him in say 1861 in the Easingwold District?

And, if he's the one in the 1901 census at 12 King Street, Halifax aged 51, with Margaret aged 57 and a Public House Manager, then he says he's born in Halifax  :-\

1851 HO107    2283 / 174 / 11

The Bowlers are living Scriven with Tentergate (Knaresborough) and son in law Thomas Smith, wife Mary and child Thomas 5 mths are with them.

Robert Bowler is a beer house keeper but in another census, he is a dealer in old clothes.

Thomas Smith is born Husthwaite which is very close to Coxwold.

It does seem strange that your  Robert gives, what looks to be Coxwold, as a place of birth, if there is no connection there  ???

The one tracked here may not be your man. There are Smiths born Coxwold but not Robert.

1871 RG10 4367/ 80/ 10
Robert A Smith b 1859 Coxwold is a pupil in Huddersfield.
