« on: Saturday 08 October 11 14:04 BST (UK) »
I dont know if anyone can point me in the right direction of finding out who the parents of John Moonlight were. He died in Dunnotar in 1804 and I have family burial details from the churchyard there.

Many thanks, Linda.

Hi Linda,

Further to your enquiry about John Moonlight, he was my gt gt gt gt grandfather. His father was James Moonlight  born (or baptised) on Oct 31 1703 in Dunnottar, Kincardineshire. His father was Robert Moonlight born (or baptised) on Dec 20 1674 in Dunnottar. His father, James Moonlight, was born in 1653 and his father was Archibald Moonlight, no dates known but he was married to Margaret Elspeth Andersone. Sorry I don't have any other details of the maternal lines.

You may already know that John Moonlight's gt grandson was Gen Thomas Moonlight, who fought in the American Civil War and became Governor of Wyoming.

Trust this is of help.

Ernest

I am new to this forum having found a reference to the Moonlight surname. I am trying to find a connection from my family (Wilkie) to the Moonlight family - since all Moonlights are related, and all Wilkies are related.

In particular, I was looking at a Thomas Wilkie (born 1863 Tannadice in Angus) & Agnes Moonlight (born in Liverpool) Marriage of 1884 in Arbroath.
Thomas's parents were : Alexander Wilkie / Jessie Fearn
Agnes's parents were : John Moonlight / Alice Moonlight (her maiden surname was illegible).
The 1911 Census shows Thomas and Agnes with family in Dunfermline, Fife.

I am hoping that perhaps someone with a Moonlight family name may have put together a family tree - because at the 1841 Scottish Census there were only 35 Moonlights listed and there was only about 500 Wilkies.

Can anyone help

Hi Ernest, we certainly have a link there as John Moonlight was also my GGGG grandfather. I hope that's the right number of greats. My GGG grandmother was Elizabeth Moonlight born in 1780. Would be good to hear from you.

Mc Kenzie, Hi,
Sorry but I don't have any Moonlight information that goes down as far as those dates. Do you have anything earlier than that?? I guess we all have a link though so it would be good to keep in touch.

McKenzie321, welcome to RootsChat  :)

This may be John Moonlight and Alice's marriage entry here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NN91-LNF with Alice's maiden name showing as Aspinall.

Is this the family showing in 1871? https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VBFV-XBM

This entry could fit well for John Moonlight's birth back in Scotland, given his birth year, name of father and subsequent naming of some of his children https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XB65-Y4C

The family group of Thomas Moonlight and Agnes Stott looks interesting to follow up on (to be confirmed it is the correct family for John down in Liverpool  ::))  - www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Thomas_Moonlight

What was the occupation for John's father on his marriage entry to Alice if you have this?

Linda, some background on this line on the link above. Maybe you can see something there to connect to that line?

Just as supporting info, for John's parents being Thomas Moonlight and Agnes Stott, see http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ANGUS/2007-11/1196015583

One of the children of John Moonlight and Alice Aspinall I think is this one https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NNCV-X4C

Could he have been named after John's potential brother in law married to sister Elizabeth? See also here http://boards.ancestrylibrary.com/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=2339&p=localities.britisles.scotland.kcd.general
