Ewing
« on: Sunday 09 October 11 13:30 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am looking for any info on a James Ewing. He was married to an Agnes Knox ( who was deceased by 1870 ) and was working as Assistant Master at the Belfast Union Poor House also in 1870.( taken from sons marriage cert ) I have a  possible address for him taken from the Belfast Directories, as staying at 151 Agnes Street, Belfast  (1861) ,occupation as stated. James had a son William born about 1846  who moved to Scotland where he married. ( 1871 Scottish census ) I have searched for a marriage/birth etc  for James on both free and fee paying sites but I have hit a brick wall. Any help would be grately appreciated.

I have just returned to this family and find myself a bit confused, on Williams wedding cert it gives his father as James but his mother as Agnes Ewing nee Knox alive in 1870.
I recently found James grave at Belfast City Cemetary where he was interred in 1878 age 71 along with Maria Ewing who died 1872 age 53 both staying prior to death at Malone Place. The burial cert states Maria was married.
The only marriage that I have seen that could be them is for a Maria McCullough marrying a James Ewing in 1856 with her fathers surname given as Knox.I initially dismissed the marriage as William would have been born 1846 and his mothers name is supposed to be Agnes, then I thought it may have been wrongly transcribed. The James that I found is definitely the right one as his profession  on burial cert is as previously posted.Any suggestions ??? :) :)Thanks Jasiain

Since you didn't mention the exact date of James Ewing's death I had to search the Belfast burial website and found another burial record which might be connected (or else total co-incidence)-
James McCullough Ewing, age 23, of 65 Madrid St., died 10 Jan.1898. Also in plot are Rachel Ewing (age 83) died 1918 and Mary Hill Ewing (age 39) died 1918 (only a few days apart- perhaps influenza?) and Elizabeth Isdale (age 49) died 1887.

Here's Rachel Ewing in 1911- daughter "May Helen" is actually 'Mary Hill' on original form (as in burial record)-

same family in 1901-

Just a thought- perhaps James Ewing married Agnes Knox, had son William in 1846, Agnes died and he married second to Maria (Knox) McCullough in 1856. The 1856 marriage certificate should give James' occupation as well as marital status (widower, divorced, single) which may clear that up.

On the Scottish wedding cert for William it has her living, I noticed in my original post that I had her deceased but that was an error on my part ::) ( it was the brides mother)
