Potton marriage
« on: Wednesday 12 October 11 18:35 BST (UK) »

 Hi all......

does anyone have access to Potton registers that can check a marriage for me  please....

I have a marriage of Edward Fitzjohn who marries Sarah King 14 Oct 1730 in Potton.
Does the original state if he is a widower or does it state parish?
From another family member I have been told he was b in Baldock in 1692... but another researcher has his death noted  on a tree in the "A" site as Baldock in 1694.
There are children bapt in Potton also atributed to Edward and Alice Fitzjohn fron 1718 to 1728.
This leads to another question on burials..... is there an Alice Fitzjohn burial in Potton around 1728-1730.
Any leads would be great. Thank you

Alice Fits John buried 17 Oct 1729 at Potton, Edward on 22 Nov 1734. So it's a fair bet that Edward was a widower on marriage in 1730.

Don't you just love these Ancestry trees where Edward is shown as born 1692 Baldock, died 1693 or 1694, spouse Alice, married 1716. Is any thought at all put into them? The best that can be said is that as Baldock is only 10 miles from Potton it might be the same Edward (but only if he didn't die in 1694!)

 Hello David...

So that does tie in for him to remarry  but the death date for Edward is a bonus. The Baldock burial of 1693/1694 on the tree seems to be transposed from his fathers death George Fitzjohn.
Going to search through IGI ...hate new site...and will see how long the family appear in Beds as the line I am most interested in that I can prove as mine moves forward into Wheathampstead.

 Thank you.

Added a bit to my earlier post, probably after you replied

I can't see a marriage for Edward to Alice in Herts on the Allen Marriage Index

 Hi David......

Thanks for checking the Herts marriage for me. Shame they are not mentioned. Does the burials of Alice or Edward give ages by any chance?
As for the dates given on the trees they all seem to use them.....basic errors....but makes you wonder what else is sheer guess work.
As for IGI even using Hugh Wallis batch numbers you end uo on the new site but everything takes so long going backwards and forwards.

Hi Tazzie ,

  have you looked here ?

Will of Edward Fitz John, Baker of Potton, Bedfordshire
Date   15 April 1735
Catalogue reference   PROB 11/670
Dept   Records of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury

I don't know if it will help or not though as I haven't seen the details myself yet

Hi Tazzie

No, no ages are mentioned in the burial entries. It's pretty uncommon to find ages at burial before 1813
