Marriage look up please
« on: Saturday 15 October 11 16:50 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have a John Davies and a Mary Ann Jones, on the 1871 Census living in Mill Street with their children, Hannah 11, Margaret J 6yrs, Evan 3 yrs Mary A 2months also Elizabeth Jones 2 yrs niece.

Going by Hannahs's age was thinking around 1856 onwards, but no too sure as Johns age looks like  28 and Mary's 36, but could be due to line on census.
John was born in Llanarth as was Hannah.

Even though Evan who is down as  3years old I was suprised when I applied for his birth certificate it was not the year I expected, I did send all the information I had on the family address ect and gave a range date of 1865-1868

Any help advice or information on the family prior to 1871 very much appreciated

Thanking you

Do you have a birth certificate for one of the children to confirm the mother's maiden name? Given the age difference & the gaps between children, it could be Mary's second marriage.

 Osprey.
Yes I have Evan's birth certificate   February 1865, mother Mary Davies formerly Jones, father John Davies General Labourer.
So first daughter named Hannah possibly after John's mother and first son named Evan possibly after John's father.
I say this as I know that it was a tradion to name the children in order after main family members.

Mant thanks Osprey

I've come across first daughter after mother's mother & first son after father's father, but not first daughter after father's mother.

Marriage would depend if they married in bride's parish or no. If in hers,

John Davies dec qtr 1862 Newcastle Emlyn vol 11b pg 66
or                 dec qtr 1864 Newcastle Emlyn vol 11b pg 73

if in his,

John Davies dec qtr 1861 Aberayron vol 11b pg 125

if in neither
John Davies june qtr 1863 Tregaron vol 11b pg 119

I don't think they married before the 1861 census as I think I spotted John on the 1861 census enumerated as single..

Wow thank you for those Cencus/s.

I need to establish a marriage for John  before I can go any further , but will keep what you have sent for future referance, thank you.

Going back to your prevous response re first daughter, my Great Granddad name his first daughter after his mother, dare say it was a joint decision.

The 1871 census shows the birthplace of Mary Davies, and also son Evan as 'Cardigan, Llangenllo'.  I think this is probably Llangynllo, which is in Newcastle Emlyn registration district.

IGI has a baptism of Evan Davies s/o John and Mary at Llangynllo on 26 November 1867 - which, if he was baptised as a baby would make him aged 3/4 on census night (2nd April)in 1871.
Are you sure that you have the correct birth certificate?  How do you know that Mary's maiden name was Jones?

Many thanks for your imput.

Well I did say that when I recieved the birth certificate I was a little bit suprised, as I assumed my Evan was born about 1867/68. in Aberystwyth, his parents were John and Mary.
John was a General Labourer
I have the family in 1871  plus
When I applied for his birth certificate I did state that I was not 100% sure of his birthdate, when a search was conducted there was 4 births  in that are from 1864-1869, the kind lady did search all records and the birth certificate of 1865 was enclosed.
