Margaret Small was the daughter of James Small (Contractor) and Margaret Small, m.s. Gibson.  John McLauchlan on his marriage certificate is noted as being a Carter.  Margaret was a Millworker.  James Small is noted as being a Contractor and his wife Margaret Gibson is noted as being deceased in 1866.  Margaret was born in Ireland, so presumably her parents married there also.  On Margaret McLauchlan, m.s. Small’s death certificate her mother is noted as being Euphemia Small, m.s. Gibson, not MARGARET – this is incorrect.

Any connections to the surname are welcomed.

A few years after your Margaret was born - but might give you establish some possible locations for her family.

Griffith's Valuation show 11 entries for the surname Small, most in the area of Granard, but also two near Mohill. Included is a James in the townland of Ardaguillion who holds 'house & garden'  - which could fit with him being a contractor. There are several other Small households in the same townland. These entries are dated 1854.

Here is some information about the Small family from Granard, County Longford in Ireland (Longford Ancestry website).

Charlton Charitable Fund Marriage (1791-1862) - James Small/Margaret Gibson 1837
Death: James Small on 1st Jan 1859, Longford Journal

Note: The Charleton Marriage Gratuity Trust provided a small gift of money for less affluent Protestant couples when they were married. Geographically, the Trust operated principally in Co. Longford but also in adjacent areas of Co. Westmeath, etc. In many cases couples applied for the money long after the actual marriage. The files are in the National Archives, Dublin.

County Longford Residents Prior to the Famine: A Transcription and Complete Index of the Tithe Applotment Books of County Longford, Ireland (1823 - 1835) by Guy A. Rymsza
The British colonial administration conducted two tax surveys of Ireland during the 19th century, the Tithe Applotment Books shortly before and Griffith's Primary Valuation just after the Famine. A veteran in data manipulation who is interested in Irish genealogy, Rymsza indexes the more than 12,600 entries in the Books from that single county, providing surname, given name, townland, civil parish, and some information about the land being taxed for the Anglican Church. People are listed by surname, and again by townland. Maps are included.

I will check out the info you found also.

Many thanks:

Shane - where is Ardagullion? What was there around that time and what is there now?  Can't seem to find it on a map.  Would love to see a picture of it - or where it was - any idea where I might be lucky?

Ardaguillion is a townland of about 661 acres and located about half way along the road between Granard and Edgeworthstown -  just south of it.

You can see the townland on the c1840 6" Historic OSI Maps - Ardaguillion  The red line marks the boundary of the townland.

To see details of the other occupants have a look at the 'original page' link on the Griffith's link posted earlier.

To see the modern route from Granard to the townland of Ardagullion see this google map : link

Shane

I can't thank you enough.  I did find the modern day on google maps, but found it all hedgerows and not much else.  I found the old OS map the most interesting as it gives me the whole area of the farm.  This is great because it now gives me something to work from.  Thank you.  Hopefully I can return the good deed sometime in the future,
