Jane Murray
« on: Tuesday 18 October 11 11:52 BST (UK) »
Woule be very grateful for a little help in finding any information on Jane Murray.  Jane was born 15 October 1833 in Canonbie, her parents were John Murray and either Janet Wylie or Janet Grieve (Father John married twice)  John Murray (father) married Janet Wylie on the 11 June 1831 but she died (death unknown) and then married Janet Grieve (marriage unkown)
Jane has several brother and sisters - John, Mary, Richard, Elizabeth and Thomas (there maybe more?)

Hello Johnner Kid

Thank you very much for all this information. A little bit of it does belong to my family, Thomas Murray is my relative but I often wonder if the headstone next door could be Thomas's younger brother.  This headstone is of David Murray's children one of them is Jane Murray, daughter of David Murray of Botbankhead, Canonbie.

But other than that nothing else matches, at the moment!

These Murray's do take a bit of hunting out!

Thanks again
Oletta

Jane's parents, John Murray died in Glasgow and her mother Janet Wylie do not know where or when she died, but John's second wife Janet Grieve died in Moffat.

I have a 1841 census for Jane Murray aged 11 born abt 1830, Canonbie, but her parents are David and Janet Murray and on the 1861 census Jane is married to John Beattie - so this is not the Jane I am looking for.  I also looked at the 1851 census for another Jane Murray born abt 1834, born Half Morton but her parents are John and Mary Murray, so again not the right one!

Hi Oleta

Have you checked on www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl? The family show there in Langholm, Dumfries-shire (just search for Richard Murray aged 1/Dumfries-shire).

1851 onwards will be trickier for tracing Jane. She doesn't show at home:

John Murray 38, shoemaker b. Canonbie
Janet Murray 43 b. Moffat
Richard Murray 12 b. Canonbie
Elizabeth Murray 7 b. Canonbie
Thomas Murray 3 b. Canonbie

Address: Bowholm, Canonbie

There are a couple of entries in 1851 for Jane Murrays b. Canonbie - one b. 1830 and the other 1837, both working as domestic servants.

There is always the possibility also that young Jane may have died as a child or a very early marriage for her pre 1851....

Hello MonicaL

Is this 1841 for John Murray in john Street, Langholm, occupation as a shoemaker?  John and his wife show their ages as 25 years old (they must be telling a few tales about their age) As John should be 33 and Janet should also be 33. I always thought that the last child on the 1841 census was Nicholas and not Richard.  But it is Richard!.  So his first wife Janet Wylie died between 1841 and 1851.

Thank you again for all your help and information

Oletta
