Henry Swash - Census
« on: Tuesday 18 October 11 18:14 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm searching for Henry Swash on the census records.

He was born circa 1848 in Worcester according to every later census -he's also mistranscribed on some as Smash and Swoish. Problem is aside from not being able to find a census pre 1871, I cannot even find a Birth to confirm he was born Worcester.

He married Mary Haskins from Bristol in Bristol, 1869, where he gave his father's name as Henry Swash. After the marriage they moved to Birmingham and Henry became a Baker.

The problem is that I can't trace him before this marriage at all. Any help would be appreciated.

Regards, Lisa.

The closest I can see in 1861 is a Henry SWASH, pauper, aged 15 in the Worcester Workhouse;  (RG09; Piece 2092; Folio 139; Page 7)  His place of birth is given as Norwich, but maybe he presumed he was born in Worcester if that's where he grew up?

The same child is in the Union Workhouse, Horsham St Faiths, Norfolk in 1851, aged 4, born St Faiths, Norfolk.  He is with his mother (?), Elizabeth SWASH, aged 43, married, born Abingdon, Berkshire.  (HO107; Piece 1811; Folio 186; Page 47)

However, FamilySearch has a baptism for Henry SWISH (sic) on 3 Jan 1847 at Horsham St Faiths, where his parents are given as James and Eliza...  :-\

I'm not 100% convinced, but at least there's a link with Worcester.

Hi Rambler,

I had seen that Henry Swash and totally discounted him because of the Norfolk connection. Though I'm not convinced either for the same reasons you give, I think it's worth looking into definitely because of the link to Worcestershire.

It may be that he didn't know he was from Norfolk? Perhaps he didn't know his father or lied on the marriage certificate. I don't suppose we'll know, - but for sure I can't find any Henry Swash born in Worcestershire to a father named Henry so it's the only possibility at the moment. :)

Thank you for your help Rambler,

Lisa

I have started to research the Swash family, sometimes Swaish/Swish, and would interested to hear if you ever sorted out your Henry?
