Here's the link for that website I mentioned.

Who was John's first wife? I note he was a widower when he married Susan.Have you managed to find John in the censuses? You did say you couldn't find John with his parents on the censuses.
Is the census you're speaking about not the 1851 one I posted?
Regarding the maiden name of Margaret's mother. Death certificates are only as accurate as the informant's knowledge! Often I've come across instances when the wrong name has been put down. The marriage certificates are usually more accurate! If you manage to find marriages for John's siblings you may be able to pinpoint when their parents died.

I found John & Susan in the 1881 census. Luckily, John was at the same address in 1871 with his first wife, Margaret. Aged 30, she was also born in Thurso. The address was 1 Gibb's Entry, Newington, Edinburgh. Is that marriage on scotlandspeople?

yes i think it might have been the census you were talking about.

if it is the right one you were talking about it looks like they had a 2 daughters donaldina and barbara i think i cant really make it out.

Hi Gary,

On the marriage certificate that you posted a part of, there seems to be a word after M.S. Henderson.
As William Sutherland her husband has died, could she have remarried and possibly to a Henderson, so at day of her son's wedding she was a Henderson.

If you check the records, Christian Henderson married William Sutherland, 1825, Thurso, Caithness.
John Sutherland born to William Sutherland and Christian Sutherland, 22 July 1833.

Regards

Malky, still confused with this one.
