BEERS family at Sawley and Long Eaton
« on: Wednesday 19 October 11 19:49 BST (UK) »
My G.Grandad Charles William Townsend b. 1848 moved from Hempnall in Norfolk to Sawley and married Mary Beers. Her fatherWilliam Beers and Charles Townsend eventually ran coal barges from Sawley Warf. I have done extensive research on the Beers family. Many descendants remained in the Sawley and Long Eaton area and some moved away. I wonder if any of the ones who may still be living in the district have photographs of any Beers relatives or of the canal barges? I have my fingers crossed. BEERS relatives could be STOPPARD,DODD, KILBOURNE etc, etc.

Hi Woggle,

Not that it is of much help, but I have a  William Beers/Bears from Sawley B.1835 who marries a Martha Pursglove in my tree  he is a Furnace man.  They all end up at Ironville.

Sadly as yet can't tell you anything more.  But happy to share.... in the future.

Best wishes,

Thanks, Copperbeech5. It took me ages to sort out the Beer/s family of Sawley and Long Eaton in the first place but your new fellow has thrown me and I am now involved with checking all my Beer/s data. I seem to have two of them born in 1835 and 1839; probably cousins. I think it is always good to check data from time to time because it is so easy to make mistakes in this game. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Cheers.

Hi Woggle,

Good to hear from you, and keep in touch, it sounds like we might well share folk!

I am working on other stuff at the moment, so my head isn't quite in the right place, but I too will look out what I have!

Best wishes,

Hello Woggle

It doesn't seem like there are too many of us researching in Sawley, my interest is SMEDLEY

I've looked over my notes and the only BEER I have found is George BEER, witness for the defence for my 3GGrandfather Thomas SMEDLEY charged at the Derby Quarter Sessions on 2 Mar 1832 with selling beer after 10 o'clock on a Saturday (pm I presume).

Didn't help, GGGGranddad was fined 50 shillings with 13/6 costs.

Sarco, thanks for your reply. I certainly didn't expect one from Australia. What an interesting story you have. Now I havn't got a George Beers born so early yet on my tree so I have popped him into the pending tray. I do have a few SMEDLEY characters on the fringe of my tree for example:- JANE SMEDLEY b. 1858 who married JOHN FAIRBROTHER b 1852 in Sawley and who married 25 Dec. 1879 at All Saints Church, Derby. Any use?

Yes, Jane is in my tree. She is the niece of my GGGrandmother Mary SMEDLEY nee SMEDLEY. Jane's father was James b. 9 Aug 1829 at Sawley m. Elizabeth HOULGATE 23 Jan 1854 at Breaston. After the death of Janes's mother Elizabeth, he m. Naomi MOORE at St Michael's Derby 27 Aug 1879.

Jane died Q2 1937 Shardlow R.D. (I think).

My GGrandfather John Thomas SMEDLEY b 1866 Sawley emigrated to NSW in 1889.

Hi Woggle,

Don't know if it helps you but I've got a distant cousin Mary Fearn b1874 Tutbury, Staffs who married a William Beers, a lacemaker b1875 in Long Eaton, at Tutbury in 1902. Their children appear to have been baptised at Tutbury.

I did a quick look up on the Long Eaton and Sawley Archive, I found this:
William Beers    Coal Merchants    Canal Wharf, Sawley Lane (Tamworth Road)
This was from around 1900 - 1918.
There may be more information on the website if you look through for a while!
