Scoullar
« on: Thursday 20 October 11 09:09 BST (UK) »
I'm searching for an illegitimate child of Joseph Scoullar.
Joseph was living with his Uncle in Dunedin & according to rumor he got the maid pregnant, this would have been in the 1870's,& was then kicked out of the house.

Hi karoa

Mmm .... the case was adjourned - you can read the outcome
in same newspaper == 11 May 1876 - Resident Magistrate's Court.    [Also published in "Otago Witness" - different dates but appears to be exactly the same wording. ]

The mother of the child is named as Mary MAHON (daughter of Robert MAHON).

Usually in this type of situation, the child's birth would be registered in the mother's surname.

As the case went to court around mid-year, you might assume that the child had been born in 1876 ?

The Birth Index can be searched here  >>

The only 1876 MAHON birth registration is for a child named "David Hughan" -- parents :  Mary and Robert MAHON.

Sadly this child died, aged 16 months in 1877.
He is buried at Dunedin with a number of other family members (including a Robert and Mary).
[It's unknown if this couple were also the parents of Mary MAHON.]

This looks "interesting".

If you go back to the Dunedin cemetery database, you'll see the following burial of baby :

MAHON - Baby - aged 1 week
Died:   4 April 1876
Buried :   Northern Cemetery
Last address:   Flag Swamp, Otago

[Shares plot with two others.   This may be a pauper's grave ?]

I cannot see a registration on the index of this child's birth.
[When an infant died shortly after its birth, it was not all that unusual (in that era) to find that only the death had been registered.]

Maybe this babe is a possibility ??

Another point of interest ...

The case against Joseph SCOULLAR, (Robert MAHON seeking on behalf of his daughter Mary, "expenses incurred in connection with her confinement"), was of course, dismissed.

The Court reports don't even mention "the child".

It is perhaps curious that confinement expenses only, are being sought ?

If the child was (still) alive, then surely Mr SCOULLAR would have been called upon to pay maintenance for it's upbringing ??

Thank you for your help.
The only reason I know about this child/relationship is that a distant relative on the uncle's side told me of the child & he found out when a GRAHAM SCOULLAR visit him searching the family tree, unfortunately he didn't take his contact details, but did mention he worked for a TV station in NZ,but I haven't been able to trace Graham.

If you follow the rugby(saw your flag) Good luck,my hubby is a Kiwi & I'm an Aussie.

Hi Kim

If you do a Google search > "Graham Scoullar + new zealand" you'll find several references to this man (he's likely the chap on the "oldfriends - Otago" network ?) ... so you should, easily I hope, be able to make contact with him.   :)
