If you go back to the Dunedin cemetery database, you'll see the following burial of baby :
MAHON - Baby - aged 1 week
Died:   4 April 1876
Buried :   Northern Cemetery
Last address:   Flag Swamp, Otago [/color]
[Shares plot with two others.   This may be a pauper's grave ?]
Maybe this babe is a possibility ??

Flag Swamp between Waikouiaiti and Palmerston is miles too far away to be called Dunedin in those times and even now.   Everything else seems a likely possibility.    Cannot find any item on Papers past connecting Mahon with Flag Swamp

"David Hughan" MAHON  - Parents Mary and Robert MAHON.

The only 1876 MAHON birth registration is for a child named "David Hughan" -- parents :  Mary and Robert MAHON.
Sadly this child died, aged 16 months in 1877.
He is buried at Dunedin with a number of other family members (including a Robert and Mary).
[It's unknown if this couple were also the parents of Mary MAHON.]

The only 1876 MAHON birth registration is for a child named "David Hughan" -- parents :  Mary and Robert MAHON.

Robert & Mary in the Cemeteries record match age-wise to the Robert & Mary marriage in First Church

Cemeteries record for this family have addresses in Halfway Bush for MAHONs Alexander,   Catherine Gillespie,  Gordon Ewen,  and James
Also shows  Jessie GILLESPIE a native of Halfway Bush (Now Western and highest suburb of Dunedin City)

Robert's last Address was Deep Stream [a remote rural Address half way to Middlemarch]
Mary MAHON nee HUGHAN would have been 38 when David Hughan MAHON was born.

My best guess therefore is that David Hughan MAHON buried in the family plot was son of Robert and Mary and the likely son of Joseph SCOULLAR and Mary MAHON is the one buried in the Northern Cemetery.   This would tie in with the death at 1 week and the Court case for Confinement Costs alone.

The maiden name of Mary MAHON nee HUGHAN [Grandmother of above] seems to tie in  Mary HARNEISS nee MAHON [Mother of above ] as a Daughter of Robert & Mary.

Maybe after her unhappy episode with Joseph SCOULLAR  Mary settled down next year with Barton HARNEISS ?

That could mean David Hughan MAHON was the missing illegitimate child after all !

And the absence of a MAHON connection with Flag Swamp, doesn't mean that the young Mary wasn't there.

Already covered in replies 4 and 5 ... but nowhere is it mentioned that the child was "a son".   [The court case doesn't refer to a "child or baby", it speaks only of Mary's confinement.]

In 1879 there is a further birth recorded of a Hannah Jane MAHON to parents Mary and Robert.   [Very possibly this same Otago couple ?   And not unusual in that era of large families for the eldest daughter to be having children whilst her mother is also still producing them. ]

That could mean David Hughan MAHON was the missing illegitimate child after all !
