Cornelius Bonner

Looking for information on Cornelius Bonner who was a private in Captain John Paley’s Company of the 1/71st Regiment of foot, which took part in the British Invasion of the River Plate in 1806-1807.  The Master Rolls records states that he remained in South America. Also on the Master Rolls was a Theophilus Bonner a private in Captain Falconer’s Company of the 1/71st Regiment of foot and I assume, might be his brother or cousin.  Cornelius Bonner would probably have been born around 1781-1786.  I would like to find out his place of birth and life before joining the 1/71st Regiment of Foot and hear from anyone who may have him in their family tree.

Hi,

I now have little more information from my original message of 2011.

I am looking for any information on these two people both from Ireland and most likely Catholic. Both are either brothers or cousins and they both joined the British Army and fought in the British Invasion of the River Plate in 1806-1807.

Cornelius Bonner born around 1781 to 1786 Ireland, died in Uruguay in 1861 and

Theophlius Bonner born 1787 London Derry, Ireland and died in 1809 place unknown.

I would like to have their parish birth records detail or find someone who have these people in their family tree.

This was a learning curve for me, the lesson learnt late was to search for alternative spelling. OXFORD NAMES COMPANION gives Bonner see Poyner a norman name ‘handy with their fists’
the irish records include Poyner eg in Co Monaghan (1847-64)  as well as many Bonner

In Griffith there are Cornelius Boner listed perhaps a stronger clue for location and then church records
1. Galwolie townland Lettermacaw parish looks like more than one property
2. Madavagh townland Lettermacaw parish

Use www.askaboutirelandgriffiths valuation and you may be able to see map on same site showing the boundaries of the house about 1857-8

Just got back after being out of action from the forum so my apologies for not seeing earlier your response. 

Thank you so much for the information I will look into it.  In the past have looked at the Flax growers of Ireland but hard to see which as I don't have his parents name.

Once I have gone through the information you have given me I will let you know what I came up with.
