Convict: Ellen Ryan to Australia 1839
« on: Sunday 23 October 11 09:12 BST (UK) »
Hi Fellow Researchers
Ellen was a twenty year old childrens maid, convicted of stealing clothes.
For this crime Ellen was cast off to Australia aboard the Convict ship "Margaret 2" for which she recieved 7 years.
From Information obtained in the Book "The Convict Ships - 1787-1868" by Charles Bateson. The Ship Margaret 2 Set sail from Dublin with 189 Female passengers. The Ships master was Ed Canney. The Voyage was 126 days in total and Arrived in Sydney 5 January 1839.
Ellen was to then Marry my G/GGrandfather also a convict, John Salter. They had to apply to be married and were given permission and were married 24th June 1841 by Father Charles Lovat.
Ellen recieved her CF dated 45/320.(Still waiting for this information to date)
My question is what happened to Ellen in Australia and what of her Mother and Father in Ireland?

This seems to be the closest match from 'Ireland-Australia transportation database'
http://www.nationalarchives.ie/
Last name:

ELLEN RYAN
female
age 20
Trial place: Co. Tipperary
Trial date: 27/12/1837
Crime: Larceny
Sentence: Transportation 7 yrs
Document ref1: TR 2, p 104

But check yourself, I only had a quick look. Does her marriage details give any clue as to parents or place of origin?

You have John Slater as your gggrandfather.

Is Ellen also your gggrandmother, or was there another marriage for John, from which you are descended?

Ellens cert of freedom I have seen on line, however I have also ordered a copy as well which is what I am waiting for. I don't like My chances but perhaps there is extra info on the cert!

Ellens marriage to John is very scant. They both signed with their mark and their usual place of residence is listed as Yass. There is the Minister listed, Charles Lovat and the two witnesses, Henry and Catherine Roberts. Neither parents for both the couples are listed.

There was another partnership for John from which I am decended. John Salter and Bridget O'Halloran had three children. I am not too sure if Ellen and John had children, is she has died or remarried, I suspect the latter.

As to the records there of the  closest match with Ellen Ryan, her Crime desc:   shows 27/12/1837, Ellen came out in 1839, which all fit with her age but there are several other Ellen Ryans from Tipperary as well. :-\

Unfortunately Ryan is a very common surname in the south, and Ellen is a common firstname, so it will be very difficult to establish any probable links with without more details.

Do you have a death cert for Ellen ?
Some death certs give parents names and/or place of birth - so it's worth checking.

You didn't mention an approximate year of birth for Ellen, but if she married in 1841 then presumably 1823 or earlier... which complicates your search even more - since very few RC parishes have records back that far.

Hi Shanew147
Thanks for your tips on Introduction to Irish records,My Ancestors from Ireland-where do I start?. I will take a look at that.

I do not have a death or a marriage as I cant establish a connection as yet. All I have to go on is the information I had first listed in the first posts.

I have been trying to work back from the convicts records, but even they aren't throwing too much up at the present time.

Ellen like I had said earlier was a twenty year old childrens maid in 1839, so this puts her as being born About 1819.
