Joseph Gagnon - Moosonee, Ontario
« on: Tuesday 25 October 11 21:36 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am looking for a Date of Birth and Death for this man, Joseph Gagnon.  He resided in Moosonee, Ontario at one time.  I have found a death certificate for one of his children, Richard John Gagnon, Date of Death is Sept 23 1931 and DOB is Jan 9, 1931.  On the Death Certificate it shows that the residence of the deceased as being Moose Harbour, Ontario.  Joseph Gagnon also had a common law wife Josephine Atikinson.   I look forward to any information.

Thank you.

** Joseph Gagnon's DOB may be late 1800's?

Moosonee, near James Bay, Ontario

His common law wife's name is also known by Josephine Sam.

He also may have delivered mail by dog sled.

Good evening Honeybadger,

I believe I found the death cert image on Ancestry. Here is the info on it:

Son: Richard John Gagnon
bn: 9 Jan 1931 died: 23 Sep 1931, Moose Harbour, Cochrane Co, Ontario
Age: 9 mths
Gender: Male
Race: French Cree

Father:  Joseph Gagnon, bn in Quebec
Mother:  Josephine Atkinson, bn in Quebec

From this I believe at least one of the parents is aboriginal (Cree), most likely Joseph (I know a number of aboriginal people with the name of Gagnon - usually assigned orginally by an Indian Agent). There is a large Cree and Oji-Cree population in Northen Ontario and Quebec. Moosonee is a remote community and here is a link describing it: http://www.moosonee.ca/joomla/. If one or both parents are Cree, that person may be status indian and thus records would be with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs.

It appears that your Gagnons travelled some throughout the north.

I hope this helps,

If you are a descendant, it is likely becoming important to you to know more about your metis bkgd.
The Ontario Metis Nation may have your genealogy already completed. In order to access the genealogy you may have to pick up your long form birth certificate....or if you have actual christening documents with parents names ( not just copies of records). The genealogy will cost you, depending on how thorough you want it to be...ie: how far back and whether both parents are searched...etc.
In order to have a metis card you will need both the genealogy & proof of parents. At least those are the requirements here in Manitoba. Hopefully you can find a contact who can let you know if there is some existing genealogy available on your family!
Make sure you tell them known children born to them ( & that no marriage exists) info from death ie: French Cree, mother 's 2 surname, and both parents born Quebec.

It would be nice to locate them on census,as they will be with parents or siblings, not with each other... but if they were from nomadic families, they would be twice as hard to find.  ( Although born in Que. might live in Ontario or Quebec or U.S.) We also don't know if Josephine is listed as Atkinson or May ( Atkinson is also a Metis name)
Best of luck!

Hello I recently found this site. My Grandfather William Gagnon was from Moosonee Ontario and he had a brother Joseph Gagnon but everyone knew him as Joey I'm not sure if this is the same family but Moosonee is rather small.
