Soho Street Glasgow 1870 help
« on: Thursday 03 November 11 19:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi there.  I found a death certificate of my 4g grandmother who died in 1873 at 76 Soho Street, Glasgow.  The informant was her son who lived in Glasgow, but as far as i am aware she lived in ireland.  Im gathering either she had not long moved there (cant find her on 1871 census) or was on holiday.

However, my dilemma is i cannot find any info on soho street in glasgow.  Id like to know if it was a tenement area in which she died (ie someone's home) or if maybe there used to be a hospital there? Or are there any photos or descriptions of soho street around this time on the internet somewhere?  She died of old age/general debility of which had a duration of three weeks and her death was certified by a surgeon (hospital??)  Her son lived at candlebriggs at the time.

Any info would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Soho Street was in the East End of Glasgow in the Calton area, near 'The Barras'

Thanks for this sancti, and the photo!  Im seeing slum housing, which suggests she may have been living there (or staying with folk).  What threw me is why a surgeon would certify her death when she was dying of old age... (that does mean that the surgeon pronounced her dead, does it?)

Did she die at Soho Street or was that described as her usual res.?

You can see Soho street on this 1912 map

East end of Glasgow and it ran between the Gallowgate and Crownpoint Road

A very poor area that was home to many Irish immigrants

Soho street was listed as where she died.  but mind you, under informant info it says "residence, if out of the house in which death occurred" which is candlebriggs.  I assumed that was the informants address but is that actually the address of the person who died? If so, what an eejit i am!!  ::)

Her husband died in ireland in 1865 and i gathered she lived there with him.  Both her sons and daughter were living in glasgow, until her daughter moved back to ireland in 1870.  Therefore, i cannot understand why she would have moved back to glasgow if her daughter and family were living on a farm literally 2 miles from where her husband died...

The street does look very poor indeed, poor woman!  But as you say monicaL, Lulu lived there!!  ;)
