Fairlie MADGWICK "Mather House" - Gourock 1867
« on: Saturday 05 November 11 21:34 GMT (UK) »
Good morning,
I am endeavouring to delve into my Scottish roots in depth for the first time and a little unsure of the geographical areas around Greenock / Gourock so hopefully I am on the right board.

I am trying to determine the type of place where my 5 x grandmother Fairlie MADGWICK died in 1867. It was stated as "Mather House" -Gourock. Would anyone know if this is a hospice of some sort or a known building in this area. Is it possible to check this location via the census or if Fairlie MADGWICK is mentioned in the census at this location prior.

Fairlie MADGWICK (nee CONNEL) was the widow of a Captain (Master Mariner / Ship Master) Frederick MADGWICK. I think he must have died early on in the marriage. They had one child that I know of being my 4 x g/grandmother Isabella Sophia MAGDGICK (later PARK). I believe the marriage and birth of Isabella took place in Greenock?

Any information about Mather House or the MADGWICK's in general would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi Sturdy
according to the 1851 census
Fairlie Madgwick is living at Watt Place Greenock aged 48, relationship servant, occupation Shipman Ana Wife
there is also another Fairlie Madgwick living there aged 9 (grandaughter)
there are a lot of others living at this address too,( no other Madgwick's though)
1861
they are still living at 1 Watt Place Greenock
Fairlie Madgwick aged 53 occupation house holder
Isabella Sophia Madgwick 19 daughter
Geo (George) Leed 47 formerly Master Mariner born Thurso
I am not sure if Mather house was a hospital or a Lodging house
I have came across other deaths at this address,
also some births too,

Thank you Elaine for the prompt reply and the information from the census.

With the 1851 census is Fairlie a servant at the household at Watt Place and is she listed as a 'Shipman's wife". Am I reading that correctly?

The 1861 census is very intersting in particular the mention of George LEED. Isabella (then 19) named her second child Georgina Leed PARK (married name). There must have been a family connection of some sort there you would thinK?

Thanks again

Yes Sturdy that is what it say's, I'm not sure why she would be a servant though
when it states she is a Shipman's wife !!
it is possible that Geo Leed was related I will look and see if I can find him on the other censuses

1841 Census Cathcart Street Greenock

Frederick Madgwick 30 born England, occupation Mer S (merchant Seaman)
Harilia (Fairlie) 28 born Renfrewshire.

Hi

As far as I can see, Mather House appears to be a lodging house although those at the address all seem to be connected with the sea.

Frederick Madgwick b.2/12/1808, bp.15/10/1809 St. Anne Soho, Westminster, London, son of William John Madgwick and Rebecca Read (who married 18/7/1803 Newtington St. Mary).
Siblings were:
William John bp.26/8/1804 St. George Bloomsbury
Rebecca bp.6/10/1805               ditto
Sophia Maria bp.2/8/1807   St. Pancras, London
John bp.15/9/1811 St. George Bloomsbury
Thomas bp.6/9/1812                 ditto
James bp.14/5/1815 St. Pancras

I can't find a burial entry for William John Madgwick but his wife Rebecca bc.1784, bur.28/5/1824 Newington St. Mary.

William John Madgwick bp.26/9/1777 Epsom, Surrey, son of John and Bridget - 4 other children were also born between 1775 and 1783 at Epsom and then the family moved to St. Marylebone, London where more children were born 1788-1793.

Frederick Madgwick married Fairlie Connel 2/9/1839 Middle or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrewshire and Isabella Sophia bp.27/5/1842 in the same parish.

Have you pinpointed the location of the house?

I have seen early reference to "Mather House, East Bay, Gourock" and "Mather House, Victoria Esplenade, Gourock".

regards

I was hoping there was only the one Mather House! The information as best as I can make out is simply 'mather House" Gourock with no street etc stipulated. Going by what you found there may have been 2 Mather Houses unless East Bay and Victoria Esplanade intersect. I will have to go to the online maps to see if that can assist. Any other ideas about pin pointing the house please let me know and thanks for the further information.
