1841 Place Names, Parish of Melrose
« on: Sunday 06 November 11 14:56 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I came across an address in the 1841 census called Mount Pleasant, Melrose Parish.  I am trying to find it on Google Earth.  I looked at a few addresses before and a few after and am hoping that someone local will recognise these and be able to pin-point Mount Pleasant for me.

these were: Eildon, Norton Hall, Eildon Bank, Langlands, MOUNT PLEASANT, Hawkslee, Newton Village, Newton Manse, Whitehill etc.

I would really appreciate any help
Thanks
Jenny

Jenny, I think this is the modern mapping area http://canmoremapping.rcahms.gov.uk/index.php?action=do_advanced&idnumlink=100202

Thanks Monica.  That is a help and good starting point but I still am not sure exactly where and what Mount Pleasant is or was.  Was it a farm? Village? Estate? and why isn't it showing now?  I am trying to find any records relating to this Mount Pleasant which appeared on the 1841 census.  The family living there at the time was named White.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
Jenny

Hi Jenny

Have a look at this map from 1863. You can follow the enumerator walk with the places names you have given but I cannot easily see Mount Pleasant (which I am guessing may be a cottage/small holding perhaps?).

This is another map, larger scale http://maps.nls.uk/os/25inch/view/?sid=74986270

Frustratingly, it stops just short of where you need to be going (near bottom r/h corner).

I couldn't see any more maps here http://maps.nls.uk/towns/index.html#melrose  Likely this is the way you will need to go to be able to identify the location.

Added: The transcription from here www.maxwellancestry.com/census/41transcript.aspx?houseid=79906024 not surprisingly shows it where we have been looking but also not more specific that we have found.

Thanks so much for all those maps and I now have a really good idea of what the place looked like, if not the actual spot.  It seems to have been swallowed up by Newton by the 1851 census.

Really appreciate the info

Thanks
Jen

Mount Pleasant is the name of a house

It has always part of Newtown Village, but just on the edge of the Old part, like the manse at the bottom where the old Church was.

Alot of the Houses in that area have name not numbers.

In 1841 the census taker must of noted the names of the Houses, as in 1861 they just state the Village.

I live in Newtown Village so I go and get you an proper location.
