Non-Conformists / Non-Conformity in Leicestershire

I read with great interest Michael Wood's book of the Story of Kibworth and the high incidence of non-conformity in the area of Kibworth (Harcourt, Beauchamp & Smeeton Westerby).


I also have a reference to one of my ancestors (my 6th Great Grand Uncle) Francis Tilley as having his house "licensed for nonconformist worship" in 1724.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information about non-conformity in these villages!

Unfortunately, I am finding only passing references to non-conformity on all the web sites I have been searching. Also, "my" Tilleys don't show up much anywhere in the records. I was hoping for a mention in the Story of England but missed out - only mention was the Groocock/Grewcock family!

Hi Diddy,

Yes, I have - none of the dates and/or locations sync with the dates I have against my people.

I get the distinct impression that while I have the statement that Francis Tilley had a house licensed to hold nonconformist meetings, it is possible that the family was "on the fringe" of nonconformity, or so non-conformist that they do not fall into Wesleyan, Quaker, Presbyterian or any other 'organised' religion.

Your post is a bit vague, so hopefully I am answering your question!

If you are referring to the book "The Story of England" by Michael Wood, there is only one reference to a Woolman in it:
Matthew Woolman p354, who is occupying a tenement that was a former workhouse, along with other framework knitters. There is no reference to religion in the text.
