village name
« on: Monday 09 May 05 13:00 BST (UK) »
Ok, so this is going to sound weird, but I'm at wit's end.  A spiritualist told me my ggrandparents told them they were from a tiny remote town, about as far north as you can be, that starts with what sounds like a hard "C"  and that she could see water.  I know they were from Denbighshire- I have the records.  Unfortunately they have the most common names-
John Morris b. 1842 & Elizabeth Hughes b. 1848.
This is a looooongshot, but all else has failed.
Can anyone out there think of a location that might fit the bill?    Thanks in anticipation.  Joan

Joan what about Cerrig-y-Druidian.  Cerrig sounds like it has a letter K at the front??

Take a look at the map in the link on the Wales /Denbighshire page

Thanks Libby...   I have that one on my list, along with Kinmel, Croesau, Cyffdu, Capellar & Cyfilliog.  I'm looking at Croesau now because it is one of the most northerly and near water.  Can't seem to find much info yet.
Thanks again, Joan

If I can be permitted to have a "guess",I would go for Conway which used to be part of Denbighshire.

Thanks William,   I hadn't thought of that.  I haven't gathered much info regarding Hughes/Morris in Conway.  A new avenue to travel!  Thanks again.

There is an Elizabeth Hughes listed in the 1861 Census, whose Brthyear  is pretty close to yours, whose Birthplace is given as Llansantfraidd Glan Conway.

Hi William...  thanks for looking that up.  Is this census online?  I've been searching for it. If not can you tell me who the family members are with her?  My first names include:
Dorothea, Ruth, Constance, Harriette & Agnes (no males).  I believe them to all be Hughes names, rather than Morris.
Thanks again,  Joan

Unfortunately Joan the Elizabeth Hughes that I found was working as a Servant in Llanelian-Yn-Rhos in 1861.There is one thing that troubles me though, and I have looked far and wide,in all the Census years up to 1901,that is I have yet to come across a couple John and Elizabeth Morris born in Denbighshire. You see when I am searching like this,I always like to see a definite Entry in the later Census,to work back from.

I really appreciate all your searching, William.
This family is on the 1881 census for Liscard, Wallasey on Rake Lane.  Elizabeth Morris & daus. Elizabeth Constance & Harriette Agnes are there.  John is a stonemason & probably off on a job.  I have found a number of prospective, married lodgers, but it could be any one of them.  By 1887 they had immigrated to the US to Maine.  I have John's papers and it states that he was b. Denbighshire.  No other information.  His d.o.b.
13  Oct 1842.
I found a site today that gives all the towns, parishes & hamlets for Denbighshire.  Lots and lots that start with a "c".  Tommorrow I'll check them out on Streetmap, see which ones are most northern.
Thanks again.  Joan
