Hi Mo,

difficult to tell H Hanson's age on his marraige cert, however, it looked to me like 26. He married 1869.

So the death on board ship 1883 of a Hanson aged 39 sure fits. Wonder if it is him??

Hi,

I have actually never sent for a marine death but you can always contact them to ask.
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

You have to register first to order a certificate.  On the first page where you normally tick the box for birth, marriage or death certificate, you should see the  option for an Overseas certificate. When you tick that box you will be taken to a slightly different page which should accept the registration details that you have.

I believe that mariners deaths were registered when a ship docked at whatever port and the relevant authorities notified.

you won't get the sort of detail that is normal on a Scottish cert. I have one for my ggrandsmother's brother. Nothing as to marital status, just the name of vessel, date & place of death, home address from what I recall.

Totally agree, Osprey.  Like you say, vessel, date, place of death,  home address, age and not forgetting the cause of death.  That will be it.

I have just started researching my family tree and believe Susan McMillan was my Great Grandmother.  My link is to the Hansen side of the family and I have details taken from Census and certificates ect.  As you have discovered the name Hansen has been recorded as Hanson/Hansum and forename as Henry/Hendrick/Hendrich/Heinerick/Henerak.  Susan seems to have been a popular choice of girls name.  I would be interested to know if you discovered anything re the fate of Henerak or if you would share info re Susan McMillan.  I have viewed the 1869 marriage cert and the 1871 census which states the family Susan plus parents and her husband Henry Hansum! were from Ireland. Within my family we always believed the Hansens were from Norway originally.

Hi SusieBC,

Susan McMillan was one of my great grandmothers. My grandmother Susan Owen (maiden name Jamieson but also noted as Hanson) was her illegitimate daughter. I have some information on Susan McMillan, which you probably already have. I am on night shifts just now, only recently woke up :-\. I will look up what I have and get back to you soonest. PS Sorry I have no info on how or where Hendrick Hanson died..
