Bar Water, Westmoreland
« on: Thursday 17 November 11 21:56 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone heard of Bar Water, Westmoreland?  I have an Archibald Jamieson, born 1870 at Patterdale, and may have traced him in the 1911 Census.  In the Census he gives his place of birth as Bar Water, Westmoreland.

Thanks

Patterdale is virtually on Ullswater and a couple of miles from Brotherswater.  Could there be some reaaly eccentric writing that reads Ulls as Bar or Bros. as bar?

In 1901 his wife was Martha - no children at that time.  They married in Cumberland

Marriages December qtr 1898

You will find Margaret on the 1881 census - both her parents were born in Ulverston

If you listen to some Cumbrians pronouncing Brothers water - say it fast and omit a few consonants you'll not be far off Bars Water - especially with a short vowel.

Brothers water -> Bro rrs water => Brrs water or more likely watter!  Some poor enumerator, possibly from away hearing it for the first time - and possibly from Brethers water.

My money's on a dialect for Brotherswater as we know it!

According to the Patterdale baptism register, Archibald lived at Brotherfield House in Hartsop which is very close to Brothers Water or Brotherswater.
