Alexander Sutherland was living in Westerdale, Caithness in 1750 when a census was done (aged 12).
This is all I have at present and this is posted on behalf of a great grandson of Alexander.

Thanks for any help.

James.

Hi James

Maybe an error on dates with posting?

There is this entry in 1851:

Robt Sutherland 59, Chelsea Pensioner & Farmer Of 6 Acres
Elizabeth Sutherland 41
Alex Sutherland 23 teacher of English Literature
Elisabeth Sutherland 20
Robert Sutherland 15
George Sutherland 6
John Sutherland 5
William Sutherland 3

Address: Newlands Westerdale, Halkirk Caithness

For a fuller entry, also other censuses in Caithness, have a look at www.freecen.org.uk/ They have excellent coverage of Caithness, 100% for 1841-71 for example.

How has the descendant of Alexander Sutherland worked back to him? As you can imagine, it will be a relatively common set of names where you would need to confirm details to make sure you are following the correct person.

Monica, twice thanks, one for the reply and 2nd, the speed ;D
Actually, I gave all I was given. On another but not essentially genealogically based I got a pm from someone who could be Male or Female asking if I could help. said person had seen my postings on f/h matters and that I lived near the particular area. I thought I'd make some enquiries first before replying.
I gather that descendants found their way to New Zealand, but as yet I have no idea.

A bit of a challenge for you then!

With a mention of census data, likely to be from 1841 onwards you would think.
