Charles Wyndham Tawell COLMAN
« on: Sunday 27 November 11 08:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I have a photograph of this man as a little lad, probably about three or four years old, taken by A G Petherick in Taunton, Somerset. Further research shows that Charles was born in Taunton in 1896, went to Epsom public school, and served in WW1 in the Coldstream Guards and the RFC. He married Annie Jacklin in the late 1920s - I haven't been able to find any children for them.

Charles' father was Walter Tawell (or Tavell) Colman, a surgeon, and his mother was Minna Braid, who I believe was the daughter of a surgeon. Walter and Minna married in London in 1878.

Does anyone have this family in their tree? I would love to know more about Charles, and am happy to send a scan of the photo to anyone who is interested.

Hi
I see a marriage for Charles W T Coleman =m=Annie E Jacklin 2nd qtr 1928
district Bosford ( boarders of Derbyshire  & Nottinghamshire)

I note that Charles is 14yrs of age in 1911 so that gives him born 1897, when he marries in 1928 he is 31years of age, his bride I note on 1911 lives in the disrict that the marriage is given as age 30yrs, could he have married this older lady who's age was againt her having children?
has I don't see any children born to mother Jacklin
I note that there is an Annie E Jacklin on 1911 born Nottinghamshire   a better age but I believe she gors on to marry a  Mr Gell in 1929 nottinghamshire
Its a long shot but a possibility ???
cheers cardiff ??? ;)

Hi
I note that they had one child early on in their marraige Lucy B Coleman born 1881 Brighton, I can track her up to the 1901 census when she is with her aunt in Oxfordshire ref 1390/68/17, but unable to find her after that maywell have married. So it looks like Charles was a suprise baby.
cheers cardiff ;)

Hi Eve/Cardiff

Although not related, I've done quite a bit of research on Minna Braid and her family.  Her father, Dr James Braid, was a local GP where I live and there is a stained glass memorial window to him in our parish church.

Minna was born in Neston, Cheshire in 1858.  She married Walter Tawell Colman GP in 1878 at St Peter's, Eaton Square, London.  Walter was Honorary Surgeon to the Brighton Hospital for Women.
Lucy Beatrice Colman (b. 1880 in Brighton) never married and died in 1935 in Battle, East Sussex.
Looks as though Minna (transcribed as Maria) Lucy (transcribed as Beatrice) and Charles were in Epsom, Surrey in 1911.  Charles Wyndham Tawell Colman (b. 1896 Taunton, Somerset) married Annie Elizabeth Jacklin in 1928 in Basford, Notts (Annie was 36 at the time and Charles 32).  Minna died in 1936 in Nottingham and Charles died in 1979 in Colchester, Essex, Annie died in Colchester in 1977.

Sorry it's not much, but hope it's of some interest

Dazey

Charles Wyndham Tawell Colman is descended from Dr James Braid (1795-1860) who was the Scottish doctor who discovered hypnosis.
I am researching Dr Braid and attempting to find any living descendants.
Please contact me if you have any info.
I would be interested in seeing this photo!
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,

I love Rootschat - five years down the track and this photo might finally be useful to someone!

I went back through my files and I see that I did a bit of basic research to make sure I'd identified the photo properly. I have scans of both sides of the photo of Charles, a picture of the grave of James Braid d 1882, and a monochrome photo of a stained glass window dedicated to James Braid MD. There's also a passenger list that features the name of Miss Florence Braid (Charles' aunt, I think) - I don't even remember why I saved that. Happy to send privately or post to this thread.

Cheers,
Eve

Just realised the reason I saved the passenger list with Florence on it - the reverse of the photo says "With love to Auntie Florence". Mystery solved.
