Court Convictions in Kerry
« on: Friday 02 December 11 20:39 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor Stephen Hughes was convicted of Larceny in Kerry in 1842. Are these records available online? Do they exist?

I have searched the CRF, but can find no record for him. He was definitely transported on the Isabella Watson to Tasmania in 1842.

We have had some luck going through the newspapers of the time- they usually had a column dedicated to the local courts and noted some of the deportations. We were at the Tralee library, where the archivist is a great help. If you have a better date, they may be willing to take a look for you.

Looked at his convict file and it gives what I understand are two court dates 9 Mar 1842 and 3 Aug 1842. He was a clerk aged 20 so born c. 1822 and native place is given as Monasterevin Co Kildare.

Just checked where the parish registers for Monasterevan are. According to Stephen's file he was of the Protestant religion and the records for Monasterevan or Harristown Church of Ireland parish are available but not online. They start in 1666 and can be accessed on microfilm in the National Archives Bishop St Dublin or in the Church of Ireland Library Braemor Park Churchtown Dublin. See link to National Archives holdings.
