Clifford family help
« on: Saturday 03 December 11 21:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello, i don't know much about my dad's mum's side of the family and would appreciate a bit of help, especially as i don't seem to be able to access any records from Ireland.

My nan was born Mary Kathleen Clifford in 1914, i think in Derry or thereabouts. Her dad was called James Clifford i think but i have no idea who he was married to or what his occupation was. He is in the picture below stood at the back by the window.

many thanks
Kimberley, Allen, Perry, Bird, Lenton, Marston, Clifford, Seth, Walsh, Belson

Perhaps start by getting a copy of Mary Kathleen's birth certificate as it should list names of both her parents.
The Irish civil registration index is online and there's a birth for a Mary Catherine Clifford Jan./Mar.1915 Londonderry registration district volume 2 page 170. However, if her birth was registered as Mary Clifford (without a middle name) it might be more difficult to find.

The 1911 and 1901 census are both online and in 1the 1911 census the closest match for a James Clifford living in County Londonderry is this 18 year old (other James Clifford in Co. Londonderry is aged 48 years)-

many thanks for that - yes i'm beginning to think her name may have been Mary Catherine Clifford. She had about three sisters if i recall - all gone now. The more i look at that photo makes me wonder all the more what my Great Grandad's occupation was :)

The James I found in 1911 census (link posted earlier) was an engine cleaner and father was a railway checker to presumably they worked with locomotives in some way.

In the 1901 census Henry Clifford was a railway porter.

Did a bit more searching and found something possibly of interest (but remember the Clifford family in 1901 and 1911 may not be your connection). PRONI Will Extracts- www.proni.gov.uk- "The Will of Ellen Clifford late of Bridge-street Londonderry Married Woman who died 9 August 1893 at same place was proved at Londonderry by Ann Cusack of Fahan-street Londonderry Widow the sole Executrix." Will written in 1893 when Ellen's address was Fahan Street-

Hi, a Mary Catherine Clifford birth was registered Londonderry Urban No2 1914, her father was James Clifford and her mother was Margaret Devlin

There was a marriage of a James Clifford and a Margaret Devlin in the same Reg district in 1913, James fathers name on marriage record is Thomas

There was a James Clifford birth registered 1882  Londonderry Urban No2, fathers name Thomas, mother Mary

Possible 1911 Census record for family here, looks like this is Thomas second marriage (married 15 years) son William aged 20, only 6 births recorded for current marriage

1911

1901

A James Clifford appears in the 1901 Census in England, Kent, birth 1882 Ireland

looks like him here in 1901 :D

There was also a James Clifford born Londonderry who received a WW1 pension (sorry don't have any other details from PPV site)

Regards

Joe
