Findlay, McIntosh, Wood
« on: Sunday 04 December 11 19:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I'm trying to locate information on my grandfather's family who lived in Kirremuir.

William Wood immigrated from Ireland at some point between 1943 - 1978
Margaret McIntosh [born 1886] married William Wood January 28, 1879
Her maiden name was Findlay, I believe her mother was Jessie or Janet
Their children were William born 1880, Alexander Findlay born 1882, Margaret & Mary.
Alexander married Jean Bell; Mary married [unknown] Taylor.

I've worked with Scotlandspeople and they have been very helpful, but I haven't been able to find out what happend to my great grandfather after 1881.  He's not listed on the 1891 census where Margaret is listed has head of family.

Any guidance would be most appreciated.

Can you clarify Margaret's birthyear please

I think you mean 1843 and 1878 but what year was William born

What is his occupation on the marriage cert/1881 census

Her maiden name was Findlay

Was Margaret previously married?

Where was she born

Where were the children born and where was Margaret living in 1891 as I can't find an 1891 entry that fits the profile given nor can I find them in 1881

SP has the following deaths for  William Wood

1893 aged 48, St Mary Dundee (this is a strong possibility).
1893 aged 59, Forfar Angus
1900 aged 63, Forfar Angus

Hi Sharon & Carol,
Yes those are the census entries for my Wood family members. I'll do some more research on the death dates.  Another possibility is that he left for America. I know both sons immigrated, Alexander in 1906 [via Canada]. I haven't been able to locate the date of arrival for my grandfather [son William] yet. Alex was going to his brother William in NYC.

William was a private with the 50th Foot at the time of his marriage.  He was born in 1843 and came to Scotland at some point between his birth and his marriage  to Margaret.  I have to do some more research on the military angle, as that might have been why he was in Scotland.  At 36, I would have thought he'd be married with children.  Their marriage license lists his as a bachelor.

I haven't been able to locate Margaret's month and day of birth, and she is listed as a "spinster" on their marriage document.  Her father was Charles & her mother Jessie [could this possibly be Janet?]. I did locate a Margaret McIntosh living with her great aunt and a Alexander Findlay [visitor] and Janet.  Findlay was Margaret's mother's maiden name.

Thank you both for all your help. It's been very difficult tracking a man with such a common name. I've come to really appreciate middle names...sigh.

Hi

A bit confused --you say that William was not with the family in 1891 but have now confirmed that the 1891 census found by Sharon is the correct one - with William in it

He's not listed on the 1891 census where Margaret is listed has head of family.

You also say William immigrated from Ireland but the census entry shows birthplace as England

I had discounted that 1891 entry in view of what you said as the info did not fit

Hi Carol,

Yes, I misspoke with regard to the 1891 census. I should have said the 1901 census, where Margaret is listed as head of family.  I was told by a distant relative who knew my Uncle Alexander that his father, William1 [as I refer to him] was Irish.

Thanks for the suggestions Sharon.  It turns out that the William Wood who was deceased in 1893 aged 48 [St Mary Dundee] was single.  His parents were David and Helen. I know from his marriage registration that my William1 parents were William and Mary.

A few bits on Margaret McIntosh and her family ...

I think her birth registered at Kirriemuir 16 Apr 1858 as 'Margaret Peter Finlay', mother Janet Finlay, no father listed - this from IGI, check out original on SP to be sure
1861 census - as you had found - Margaret McIntosh living with her Great Aunt, Margaret Peter, Alexander Findlay, Janet Find/lay her mother, in Kirk Wynd, Kirriemuir
1865 - Janet Find/lay marries William Peacock in Dundee, they have a daughter Barbara Duncan Peacock (see Ancestry for family trees for her)
1866 - Janet Find/lay Peacock, mother of 'your' Margaret McIntosh dies in Dundee
