Waterman & Lighter-men Apprenticeship Bindings. Look Up Please
« on: Friday 14 September 07 20:30 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace Thomas Wheatley b. Dec 1797 Bethnal Green to Thomas snr. & Rebecca. Variously described as mariner, boatman & waterman. He settled in Rainham Kent, and his sons and grandsons were Barge Masters plying the full tidal reaches of the Thames from Chiswick to Shoeburyness/Faversham. I've traced the "boys" through census & parish records, but I've come across tantalising traces of Wheatleys involved in the river trade since the early 1600s. Can anyone help me track old Thomas to his roots in London?

thx
Aven

My GGGrandfather was Thomas Wheatley born Rainham 1827. His father was also Thomas who married Elizabeth Dennis. I beleive the Dennis family were also involved in the river trade. My GGrandfather was recorded on the 1841 census aged 14. In 1847 he was convicted of stealing and sentenced to 10 years transportation to Australia where he eventually prospered. Looking for details of the crime and any links to the river trade involving Wheatley's and Dennis's. Any info greatly appreciated, Brazl
