Starks of West Linton
« on: Wednesday 07 December 11 13:46 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to help an American friend find out more about her Scottish Roots but have hit the proverbial brick wall.

William Stark son of John Stark and Ann Blair b c 1815 in Dolphinton   Lanarkshire married Margaret Todd daughter of James Todd and Margaret Messer in 1845 in Charlestown (This was on the 1855 birth cert. of their twins Alexander and Janet) I have found them on 1851 census living in West Linton with their family.
John, James, Francis William and Margaret but just can't find them after that.
William died in 1897 and Margaret in 1888 both at Glencourse Midlothian but where were they between
1851 and their deaths.

Thanks for any help.

Jessie

Hello Jessie and others - here is the family in the 1851 census in West Linton, Peebleshire.  From freecen.

I went to the IGI to get the Francis birth as it's the one which stuck out the most - 06 APR 1848  West Linton, Peebles, Scotland

I'd a look at the 1881 on the LDS disc last night - I can't see the ages being so grossly out in the census - and I can't see a man who in '51 was a farm Servant 10 years aleter being a joiner - a crofter or farmer or a variety of other occs., but not  a trade occ.

Can anyone see an alternative family ont eh 1861?  Regards,   Steve  :)

Hi Piglet,
That's them sorry slippery I made a mistake I thought you had them but Francis William is on this one so this is the correct family but thank you once again for your help.

I have had an email from my friend.
This is all she has up to date on the family
Where they are on 1861 and 1871 census I have no idea.

in 1881 census William and Margaret are living at Damhead Lasswade Midlothian he was born in Dolphinton Lanarkshire she in Stobo Peebleshire ( also  found on a1855 birth cert. for their twins Alexander and Janet)  he is a domestic servant/gardener Margaret dies in 1888 at Glencourse where William is living at Easter Bush Cottage on 1891 census with daughter Cecila aged 33
she was born in Edinburgh c 1858 he died there in 1897

Any help much appreciated .

Regards,
Jessie

A further mystery regarding 'Cecila' - there is no-one of that name born in Scotland between 1855 and 2009 according to Scotlands People.

There are 6 'Cecilias' - but 4 of them are born after 1900.  1 is born in 1873 and the nearest one - born in 1860 in Edinburgh is not her - she's a Cecilia Mozley Stark - born to a male Mozley who is a builder and a female Stark.

However - on the 1881 census - there are 2 Cecilia Starks - one born in 1859 and the above one born in n1860 - both born Eduinburgh    :-\ :-\

Regards,  Steve   :)

Then back I went to Scotlands People to see f she got married.  In all of Scotland there are only 5 Cecilia Starks who marry between 1855 and 2009.- only 3 before 1946.  I downloaded the 1894 one as a likely bet - is 34 years old - has a father William - not at the address given by Jessie - and has a different mother.

1.  1894 BAILEY JOHN STARK CECILIA JANE LASSWADE /MIDLOTHIAN 691/00 0036
2.  1882 PURVIS GEORGE CARRINGT STARK CECILIA MOZLEY NEWINGTON EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/05 0350
3.  1899 CAMERON ANDREW STARK MARY CECILIA ST MARY DUNDEE CITY/ANGUS 282/02 0136

Hi Piglet,
I have been trying to find Celia either a marriage or death but nothing have found marriages and deaths for the rest of the family although this doesn't help find out where William and Margaret where in 1861 and 1871  and anything else about Celia.
Alexander b 1855 died the same year
Janet b 1855 died 1861
Margaret married in 1869 and died 1930in Clackmannanshire
Francis William married in 1870 and died in 1930 in West Lothian
John married in 1868 to many deaths to find him although he registered Williams death in 1897 and was in Langholm Dumfriesshire he was married to a Agnes Alexander in Whitburn West Lothian.
Thomas married in 1889 and died in Cawdor Nairn in 1948
James married in 1868 and died in 1894 in West Lothian.

Tried the census on Scotlands People but was going to cost a fortune maybe some kind soul will find them for me failing that it will be a trip to Edinburgh in the better weather .
Thank you
Regards,

Jessie
