Transportation help please ?
« on: Monday 19 December 11 14:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,
Just wondering if someone can possibly help ? (I have never looked at transportation before, so hope I have put my query in the right section )

I would like to find out more about a man named James Scriven of Alveley, Salop who was found guilty of stealing a Goose and other fowls in February 1823, and sentenced to 7 years transportation ?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated  :) :) :)

Hi

Not all those sentenced were transported. Many were sent to prison hulks. He was received on the prison hulk Justina at Woolwich  on  14 April 1824 and is recorded as being sent to the prison hulk Ganymede, also at Woolwich.

The Gannymede records record him as having been pardoned on 30 Sept 1826 so I don't think that he left the country.

He was recorded as aged 24 in 1824.  Tried and sentenced at Worcester 4 March 1823 for stealing poultry.

and, just in case it is

1841
Broad Land, Alveley
HO107/921/2/29/20

James Scriven, 45, ag lab
Mary, 40
Samuel,13
Jeffrey, 10
James, 5
Ann,2
Emma,1 mth
?Ann Gould, 13
All born County

Also, on the IGI James Scriven married Mary Williams, 25th Feb 1822, Alveley. I didn't see anything on his marital status in the records/newspapers that I looked at. Given that first son on here was baptised 13 Jan 1828, it's a possible for him.

Hi

Just noticed your question while I was doing a search - the answer is in the original question:

Hi Brevitas

Thanks for your reply, but I am looking for confirmation in the records linking this James Scriven of Alveley to the James Scriven transported for stealing the goose.

Thank you anyway.

I think  you'd have to ask alveleyhistorian. I also believe that newspaper reports were mentioned, if you read the thread carefully.
