Hi Andy,
Have checked 1841 parish of Holystone, sorry no Lowes at all.  It's a small parish so didn't take long, but there are lots of neighbouring parishes, won't be able to check them all.  I'll try Craigs in Eglington parish later, in case they were in that area.  If you find out where Eleanor was born that might help.
More later,
Barbara

Andy

I am also tracing Lowes in Northumberland - but mainly in the Preston / Tynemouth area.  If you have any names in those areas I would be grateful if you could PM me!

Thanks

hi Andy

The spelling is 'Woodhouses'   and 'Dueshill'   , Woodhouse is near West Wood burn.

Has anyone come across a Benjamin or Nicholas  in the 1841?

The ref for family of Robert Lowes at Woodhouses is..

Piece 2423 Folio 278 Page 10.

Eleanor ( aged 21 ) birth place was Craig*

On the front of Folio 278 ... page 9 ( page 10 is the reverse side of Folio 278)... was .....

Nicholas Lowes, widower, 55, Farmer of 900 acres, employing 4 labourers, born Shawbush.
Son Robert, son, unmarried 23 Farmer's son, b.Craig*
Dtr Mary, 14, scholar, b. "   .
Son, Edward, 10, b.  "   .
Father, Benjamin, widow, 88, Whiteside.
Servant, Ann Wilkinson, u/m, 18, house servant, b. Bellingham.

On the top of the page  ( 2423-278-9) was

John Bell, widow, 42, Farmer of 200 acres, b. Harbottle.
Son, william, 5, b. Dewshill*
Sister, Sarah, u/m, 30, b.Harbottle.
Servant, Thomas Lowes, u/m, 22, Farm Servant, b.Craig*
Servant, Mary Proudlock, u/m, 18, House Servant, ????**

About 20 folios earlier ( 2423-252-5 ) at Elsdon....
In the household of Robert Hall , farmer of 80 acres, b.Elsdon... was ... Servant, Nicholas Lowes, u/m, 19, Farm Labourer, b.Craig*

* I see from later responses that these  places were Craigs and Dueshill ( but did not look like these to my (old) eyes)

** This birthplace look something like Yallowfield.

Entry from Parson & White Trade Directory, Northumberland, 1824.........

"Benjamin Lowes, Farmer.. in Parish of Corsenside, Township of Corsenside, in the place of Craig ( This time "Craig" was typed, not handwritten")

_________________________________________________

From " Index of Northumberland Marriages, 1813-1837" there were marriages of 5 Robert Lowes.... take your pick...

22/2/1813 Newcastle , All Saints.. Isabella Rutherford.
20/5/1815 Haydon Bridge, ... Catherine Johnson.
5/3/1817, N/C All Saints, Dorothy Brunton.
2/7/1818, Simonburn, Ellenor Bell.
15/12/1821, St John Lee, Ann Hetherington.

Taking clues from the geography and the Naming Pattern, then maybe Ellenor Bell is best candidate. Also interesting to see Thomas Lowes living/working with John Bell... his uncle??.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

In same marriage index, there were the marriages of 3 Nicholas Lowes.....

31/12/1818 Wark.. Ann Wilkinson.
7/12/1825 Chollerton, Hannah Leadbitter.
16/11/1833 N/C St John's.. Lucy Carr

________________________________________________

One Benjamin Lowes marriage...

8/2/1832, N/C All Saints... Elizabeth Brown

Many thanks :D

NIcholas  is my side of the Lowes family and I think it looks like Andy Stuart's
Robert and my Nicholas were brothers.  ??? as they were both born at the same place, and their children were born at Craig. This then  gives us the clue their father was Benjamin. :D

;D Many many thanks Micheal.

You have proved a family link between Cloe and myself.

The people on these pages have been a great help and have helped me uncover a large number of my Ancestors in recent weeks.  So much so that I have not had a chance to get my filling up to date as yet and have a mountain of paperwork to get through.  A better problem than looking at those brick walls that I have had for some time now.

Thanks to all for their help.

Regards and Best Wishes,
Andy Stuart.

The Craig is SW of Holystone at NY937998

I believe the Woodhouses location mentioned is SW of the current Dueshill Farm NT960 014 south of Holystone village in the Upper Coquet valley - ie around 2km away.

I'd originally discounted the Haltwhistle connection to the Lowes in Bellingham/Rothbury area, but there is a Whiteside Farm N of Haltwhistle. But there's also several others, including near Falstone which I think must be in Bellingham parish.

As yet, I have no idea where Shawbush is. Any ideas?

Yallowfield may be Fallowfield, between Acomb and the Military Road.

Ordnance Survey's Get-a-Map is great albeit slow for finding locations.
