Confusion in US Virgin Islands
« on: Monday 26 December 11 18:51 GMT (UK) »
I'm confused.

Following people with a particular surname (Dunbavin), I've found more than one family group in the cunsuses where the head of household is apparently a single mother, but has one or more children with a completely different surname, and is also shown as single.

Was it common for an illegitimate child to take the surname of the father, or is adoption a more likely reason?
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
