finding Sarah Hoey
« on: Wednesday 28 December 11 16:25 GMT (UK) »
Hello and Merry Christmas all! ;D

As stated above I am finding it very hard to trace the above person!
Sarah is my husband's granny and I can't seem to get anywhere with her :-[
On the 1911   census in Dublin she is married to John Connell with 2 children and living in DunLaoghaire and is aged 26.Married 6 years by 1911.
Can't find her on the 1901 census, the nearest is a Sarah aged 11 in Cavan :-\
None of the family know her parents names or anything else about her.
I have been onto roots ireland and family search and cant even find her marriage, birth, anything.
I have researched my husband's  father's side with no bother using these sites and the GRO so what am I doing wrong here?

Any help or suggestions would be welcome :)

The best place to start the search is with the marriage on the civil BMD Index.

Where were Sarah, John and any children born ?

this looks like your Connell family on the 1911 return :

  Connell Desmond Ave

all born Co. Dublin, so if marriage and births of the children took place in the same area then the registration district would be Rathdown.

Do you have a birth cert for one of the children to confirm Sarah's maiden name ?

there's a possible marriage cross-match on the BMD Index :

  Name: John Connell
  Registration district: Rathdown
  Event type: Marriage
Quarter and year: Jul - Sep 1905
  Volume : 2 / Page : 857

  Name: Sarah Hoey
  [same index references as John]

Hi Shane, thanks for the quick reply!
Yes that's them on the census.According to this they were all born in co dublin.
Don't have anything else on them at all.
My sister in law said that Sarah was 64 when she died in 1954(have a photo of the grave stone) which would make her born circa 1890 , and ONLY 21 in 1911 instead of 26 but as you know some of this info can be a bit iffy.
The hubby was going to go the the local registrar's office today to try and get a marriage or birth/death cert to get a name to go on but they're not open till next week.
I have tried the civil bmd index on Familysearch but can't seem to come up with anything atall!

I will check BMD index  :)

I cannot find any trace of either John Connell or Sarah Connell (nee Hoey) on the 1901 Census :(

This might be just a strange coincidence.  Hoeys are scarce in Dublin.  However, on the 1911 census

Sarah Connell (nee Hoey), aged 26, is living at Desmond Avenue...Dun Laoghaire  and

Sarah Hoey, aged 26, is recorded as a  servant @ Clarinda Park East...Dun Laoghaire

both addresses within half a mile of each other.  Might this be the same person?

could she have worked as a domestic servant and not mentioned her marriage & children etc to get work?

It's possible Sarah was 5 yrs younger than stated on Census.  We understood she was 64 when she died yet given she is suppose to be 26 in 1911 her age at DOD should have been 69.

Any help on tracing back furher aprreciated.

I'd wait for the marriage cert to find out father's names and occupations, plus places of residence at the time, and then have another go at locating the Hoey and Connell families. The Hoey surname could be mistranscribed... it's also possible that Sarah's parents also could not read and write, which could also result in an error if their census form was filled in by an enumerator.

I had a quick look through all the Sarah's born Co. Dublin and living in the Dún Laoghaire area... but no good matches showed up.

If she was under 21 at the time of the marriage then the cert should state her age, or 'minor'

Hi Shane, thanks for the reply again.
Yes,think the best thing to do is wait and get the marriage cert. At  least then we can get the fathers names.

Will let you know how I get on

Thanks again

Hi,
If you haven't found her yet Sarah can be found staying with her sister Alice Gardiner (Gardner on the 1901 census return) in Steens Row Belfast (Co Down).0 Although listed as Church of Ireland the sisters are both Catholics and are the daughters of Patrick Hoey & Jane Gibney of Kingstown.
I hope this helps.
