Thank you for all that.  What I would like to find out is the birth and death date of Hera Te WHAKAAWA, her parents names, the date William NICHOLLS married her, the names and dates of birth of their children, who the children married.  I have 5 names but did read somewhere there were 6.    If anyone can help with any of this it would be much appreciated

I'm sorry if I keep saying refer to past threads..but alot of the info is there
I will check because several of the children have their marriages and family/children details.

The marriage was Maori, so not registered and not in a church but performed by maori ceremony if I remember rightly

In one of the obits it gives details of Susan's lineage..sister of chief te Moananui
Details here
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=OG19150716.2.21

Maori whakapapa/family details are not so easy to list,,they are often more in story form due to their exemption from early registration

The obit mentioned above
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&cl=search&d=OG19001217.2.12&srpos=1&e=-12-1900--12-1900--25-OG%2cTHS-1----0nicholls--
has at William's death (1900) children living as
Mr W G Nicholls (His death ref in previous post, Wiremu Kerei aka William Grey md Rihitoto Mataia ) ADDED
Mr J Nicholls (aka Hemi/James Ponui Nicholls died 1941 buried Morrinsville) ADDED
Mrs Dearle (Alice Grey NICHOLLS Married Charles John DEARLE) ADDED
Mrs Smallman (Harete Te Whakaawa aka Harriet or Charlotte. Married 1860 John Richard William Guilding, then c1868 Joseph Smallman) ADDED
Mrs Cartman (Susan)

Mrs Smallmans family details are in the threads
Harete Te Whakaawa aka Harriet or Charlotte. Married 1860 John Richard William Guilding, then c1868 Joseph Smallman

The problem being, of halfcase descent the family went under maori and english names..so creativity needed

Me Again
another way you can see family names is at the NZSG First families search
http://www.genealogy.org.nz/FF_Search_31.aspx

enter Nicholls
then select William and you can see the different family makeups and possible names to explore at places like BMD online for further dates
